By Team Starshroom - Part of CYON of Gaia's SUPER MARIO RE:MIX

CURRENT VERSION: V1.1.0

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!

After ten years more and counting in the SMBX community, FutureNyanCat AKA. CYON of Gaia has finally released his first SMBX episode, with the joint effort of the Team Starshroom crew! Captain Toad: Prism Star Quest is a new fanmade adventure starring Captain Toad, carrying over the gameplay mechanics of Super Mario 3D World's Captain Toad levels and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker into a completely 2D setting, with new gimmicks, levels and bosses to boot!

This episode is designed as a pseudo-sequel of sorts to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and features a lot of influences and content based on it, essentially doubling as a love letter to the game itself. Prism Star Quest also features some voice acting from team members including CYON of Gaia and Sleepy, especially towards bosses and original characters!

This episode (originally a minisode, haha...) features a collaboration of levels brought to you by CYON of Gaia, MegaDood, Prism Emerald, OneTonShoe, SuperAlex, Suckerman7, and lolcode.

This is Team Starshroom's first ever release, and also the first completed SMBX episode by FNC/CYON himself after several years of being in the SMBX community. This episode is also part of the CYON of Gaia Super Mario RE:MIX AU, which is part of the greater RE:CYON of Gaia OC universe! Super Mario RE:MIX is my headcanon universe for the Super Mario series, which intertwines several concepts, characters and storylines from across every mainline game, RPG and spinoff to create a new, massive sandbox I can play around in to create new stories for Mario and friends!

STORY

It is a few days before Princess Peach celebrates her birthday, and everyone is preparing gifts for her, including Mario and Luigi. But only one has not decided on a gift for her yet, and that is renowned treasure tracker and expert adventurer, Captain Toad!

At the same time, big news spread throughout Toad Town, this time about the rumors surrounding the legends of the big, rainbow-colored Prism Star and the veracity of its existence. Allegedly being the rarest Power Star in the Mushroom Kingdom, it's no surprise that news about such an extremely valuable treasure would reach Captain Toad's ears. He decides that the Prism Star might be the best gift for Princess Peach, and so he sets out on a big adventure throughout the kingdom to retrieve it.

Only problem is dealing with the dastardly Kuroku the Raccoon Thief, who runs into him at the familiar Mushroom Ruins. Kuroku seeks the Prism Star too for he wants to add it to his collection of big treasures, eventually selling it off to become the richest thief in the whole world. With differing motives but the same goal, Captain Toad and Kuroku's rivalry kickstarts. Now it's up to you to help Captain Toad race to the Prism Star first and retrieve it, especially as a big birthday present for Princess Peach!

CHANGELOG

Spoiler: show
v1.1.0
This version overrides all past versions of v1.0.0 and includes every hotfix leading up to it. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

IMPORTANT:
- A new versioning scheme will be used going forward: x.y.z. (suggested by Chipss)
-- x = major version
-- y = minor version with bugfixes/additions
-- z = hotfix patches
- The next major release of PSQ is v2.0.0. The last minor version with bugfixes is now v1.1.
- An archived version of the changelog is now included.

ADDITIONS:
- Added several new cheats:
-- needarainbowmushroom (invincishroom, needaninvincishroom, rainbowpower) - Adds an Invincibility Mushroom to the player's inventory. You might like this as a easy-to-use alternative to donthurtme.
-- needanorb (pondertheorb, praisetheorb, dungeonclear) - Adds a goal orb to the player's inventory.
-- needasmile (smileforyou, imveryhappy) - Get a smile! (for free)
-- getrichquick (scroogemcduck, scroogemcshroom) - Adds 100 coins per tick, even faster than the moneytree cheat.
-- ultimateheal (ultraheal, okheal, betterheal) - Heals the player back to max HP.

- Added new aliases for existing cheats:
-- needamushroom = mushymushy, imveryhungry
-- needaflower = needafireflower, cominginhot
-- needahammersuit/needaboomerang = throwback, returntosender

LEVEL-SPECIFIC CHANGES/FIXES:
- Fortress of Fury - Changed a few things:
-- One setup has been changed to make it less likely for the player to take damage often.
-- Increased some numbers on the Dropdown Countdown Lifts.
-- It's now slightly easier to backtrack after the second gem.

- Chaos in the Cemetery - Corrected a certain easter egg:
-- The easter egg is now properly hidden, it was previously shown due to an oversight.
-- Corrected to no longer hurt the player - this was previously due to a basegame bug.

- Infernal Fringes Frolic: Adjusted enemy placements.
- Pwnpickax: Awkward ladder placement has been changed to a wider ladder. I think that looks much better.
- Malware-Me Mass Attack: Sound design has been improved:
-- Added 8bit sound effects for the level clear sequence.
-- Changed the powerup sound effect to a higher quality version, which is also used in Midnight Museum Mania.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- <!> Relevant cheats for basegame powerups will now move items to the reserve box instead. The valid ones are needamushroom, needaflower, needahammersuit, and some of the newly added cheats.
- <!> Attempted to fix fastClimb.lua again:
-- Fixed error occurring on clearing levels with the ? orb while climbing a ladder. This is done by clearing the memory address that stores the index of the last climbed NPC/BGO while a winState is occurring.
-- Attempted to fix clipping issues when colliding with playerblock NPCs. This fixes an issue with clipping into the spy blocks in Automaton Elysium.
-- Tried to minimize minor clipping issues when fastclimbing into walls and ceilings. This may have been further fixed with antizip.lua, but more testing is needed before fastClimb.lua can be released publicly. Please note that this means fast climbing may be temporarily disabled if you try to hug a wall then hold RUN, you need to stop hugging the wall to make it work properly.
--- This also now includes detection for if a block is hidden.

- Changed the palette of Stone Spikes to match their New Super Mario Bros. Wii counterparts more (and to also match with their NPC counterparts in Toad Town). Additionally, their mouth now has proper shading to match the SMM2 Spikes, and their holding sprites have been changed to look less flat.
- All previous bugfixes and changes carry over from previous versions.

v1.0.32
This version overrides v1.0.31. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

IMPORTANT CHANGE:
- <!!> After some consideration with various user feedback and with Team Starshroom, it is for the best that we remove the checksum/integrity check from the episode. We originally added this to attempt to deter any addition of any rule-breaking or offensive content from being edited onto the splash screen for SMBX2, especially for live streamers. While this was an addition I did in good faith, there were concerns that were raised against the inclusion of such code. This was a decision that was considered very heavily, especially for the following reasons:
-- Constant confusion on whether this addition of the checksum is a bug or not, leading to users reporting this as a "bug" in both the forum topic and the Starshroom Discord's bug reports channel.
-- Users may choose to use customized splash screens, or a completely blank splash screen, or even being left with outdated splash screens in some rare cases when patching from SMBX2 Beta 4 to Beta 5. With that not being considered at first when this checksum was added, this could lead to false positives being caught. We realized we could not control what people can do to their own installation of SMBX2.
-- With the integrity check, many LunaLua-savvy users would be encouraged to put the code in various custom content in SMBX2, which includes NPC packs, their own projects, and more. This should be discouraged by now for such reasons.

With that said, the checksum has been removed, and you can still play the episode normally. However, please be respectful as always to everyone else, especially as SMBX's community is very adjacent with the LGBTQIA+ community (which I also support as well). I would like to apologize to everyone, especially those who have called out on this issue, for causing such inconvenience with this code. I know I added this in good faith, but I did not think beforehand before adding such a thing. Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for helping improve the user experience for Captain Toad: Prism Star Quest.

LEVEL-SPECIFIC CHANGES/FIXES:
- <!> Final Boss: Attempted to fix softlock when entering the tank before starting the intro to Phase 4 for the first time.
- Flight of the Broomstick: Added a checkpoint.
- Pipe-Vine Greenhouse: Added a checkpoint.
- Rumble Crumble Ruins: Added sand breeze weather. Similar change was added to the end of Super Pickax Ruins.
- Iridescent Ignition: Changed a setup to account for the change to the Bob-omb speed.
- Pwnpickax: Fixed a softlock pipe and added a little special thing.
- Chaos in the Cemetery: Changed the conditions for a certain achievement. Maybe try plucking all the non-generator Pluck Patches...

- Spinturn Sizzle:
-- Fixed a Big Spike's spikeballs getting stuck.
-- Increased the idle time of Big Spike.
-- Downgraded a big spikeball pluck patch to just a regular spikeball patch.
-- Redesigned a spikeball spring setup for clarity purposes.
-- Added some extra coins.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- <!> Attempt to rewrite fastClimb.lua to optimize and fix various bugs:
-- Fast climbing now checks for the climbed NPC or BGO, instead of a vine-related NPC intersecting it.
-- All directions of fast climbing now instead change the player's x/y coordinates instead of the NPC's speed. This prevents errors where some climbable vines/ladders may push the player very fast off them. NOTICE: Must be used in conjunction with antizip.lua to avoid the player from getting crushed.
-- The stored climbing NPC/BGO's index is now reset if the player stops climbing, which prevents a potential error/crash from occurring when completing the final boss.
-- An updated version of the script will also be uploaded to the SMBX forums for public use at some point, and will also be used in Midnight Museum Mania. For now, the script's update is included in the episode and I allow anyone who finds it to use it - but this is VERY EXPERIMENTAL!

- Added missing voice credits for Kazumi Totaka (Yoshi)
- Deregistered the cheats for multiple player clones (supermario4 to supermario128) and switching single-player/multiplayer mode (1player, 2player), as it is unsupported.
-- Any other cheats should be used with EXTRA caution - I cannot fix bugs that may result from using cheats! Be sure to disable cheats when reporting bugs (eg. type in "newleaf" to disable all active cheats.)
- Optimized 100% completion achievement code.

v1.0.31
This version overrides v1.0.3. Please take note of the following:
- This version includes all past fixes from v1.0.3, v1.0.2 and its hotfixes. Please read through the past changelogs to see these changes.
- Future hotfixes are now denoted by numbers instead. This version was meant to be v1.0.3 HOTFIX, but is named to v1.0.31 for convenience.
- All past versions of PSQ had their download links removed to save up on file space, including the original version of v1.0.3.
- Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- <!> Added fastClimb.lua, backported from Midnight Museum Mania. Hold RUN to climb faster.
-- You can also use this script yourself in your episode, too! See this: viewtopic.php?t=29913
-- Added two NPCs to Toad Town and Fire Flower Tundra to explain this mechanic better. You might encounter an extra Chargin' Chuck at the start.
-- Despite this change, the gem par times and staff times for Knock Out Zone will not be affected. Same goes with Trial of the Ninjis and Super Pickax Ruins.
- <!> Removed dev saves, yet again. Why the hell does this always happen to me...
-- Removed dev saves from my personal devbuild of PSQ that I'm using for the release versions as to prevent me from forgetting to remove these dev saves before uploading a new version of the episode.
- Fixed launcher showing outdated version

v1.0.3
This version overrides all previous versions of v1.0.2. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

- The Gloom-Shroom Doom: Slightly improved the level.
-- Added an extra checkpoint.
-- Added some mushrooms before the second Rotten Mushroom puzzle.
-- Removed a Shroob that was blocking the Clear Pipe to the last section to make it less frustrating to defeat.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- <!> Removed all cameo/credit branding related to VSHOJO. These changes will also be reflected in the next episode release by Team Starshroom.
Please read the following announcement on BlueSky for more information: https://bsky.app/profile/cyonofgaia.bsk ... jej3awy22t
-- Replaced a loading screen tip.
-- Altered intro cutscene.
-- Various 0_CREDITS.txt files have been altered to reflect this. If I missed anything, please let me know.
-- Soundtrack credits have been altered, especially in the Excel spreadsheet.
-- The soundtrack download was also updated to reflect these changes.
- Updated the credits.

v1.0.2 HOTFIX 3
This version overrides all previous versions of v1.0.2. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.
From now on, all urgent fixes are marked with <!>. For all changes introduced in v1.0.2, please read the previous changelogs.

LEVEL-SPECIFIC CHANGES/FIXES
- Toad Town: Added some QoL stuff:
-- Added a progress tracker for 100% completion - check the golden computer in the T.O.A.D. HQ!
-- Added in-game instructions for repairing a broken savefile.
-- Added an extra Warp Hub terminal leading to the T.O.A.D. HQ.

- Battle Fort Beatdown: Toned down the volume of the Specter Gate opening jingles.
- Disgusting Downtown: Slowed down a moving rope on the second gem.

- ASCEND! Mystifica Tower: Added an alternative way to earn a certain achievement, also seen in Battle Fort Beatdown.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- <!> Fixed save data for achievements and progression not being initialized in time on a newly created savefile, causing an error to occur in the local function for the savefile fix cheat.
- <!> Fixed secret levels not recording in completion data properly. OnPostNPCCollect just doesn't work with these goal orb NPCs.
- <!> Fixed incorrect level checking conditions for a hidden achievement.
- The savefile fix cheat code will no longer trigger if the game is paused, as to avoid potential glitches.
- Tinted the continue arrows green/red on the robot textboxes. This change carries over to Midnight Museum Mania.

v1.0.2 HOTFIX 2
This version overrides v1.0.2 HOTFIX and v1.0.2. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES:
- Fixed a typo in progression savedata, which caused Operation Iron Mouse (??????) to not count for 100% completion.
-- Due to this particular bug fix affecting savefiles, I have added a special cheat code to help repair broken savefiles. Type in "ohnomysavefileitsbroken" or "fixmysavefileplease" on the world map or in a level. USE WITH CAUTION - THIS IS ONLY MEANT FOR REPAIRING SAVEFILES.
-- YOU WILL NEED TO REBEAT ALL SECRET LEVELS AND COMPLETE THE FINAL LEVEL OF EACH WORLD (INCLUDING BOSSES) TO FIX YOUR PROGRESSION!
- AGAIN removed some stray progress.json and savefiles.
- (Undisclosed in previous hotfix changelog) Added a cheatcode alias for needahammersuit - needaboomerang.

v1.0.2 HOTFIX

- COINS GALORE: Improved the bonus level a LOT:
-- Added new NPCs to the level, named Toketoris.

-- Adjusted various parts of the two levels. There might be new items added if you get 100% completion.
-- Attempted again to fix an unnecessary space in Mr. Touken's dialogue. For some reason the PGE editor did not save the changes even though I clearly pressed OK, so I had to copy and paste the NPC to fix it.

- KLONDIKE CANNONRY: Fixed some stuff.
-- Added checkpoint near the 2nd Super Gem.
-- Removed blind Spike in the 3rd gem puzzle.
-- Added another backup pipe to help save the player if they accidentally softlock in the area near the 2nd gem.

- TRIAL OF THE NINJIS: Improved the level.
-- Removed a platform with very weird behavior that was used once, and replaced it with ropes.
-- Added an arrow sign on the wall near the golden pipe leading to the 3rd gem.

- BATTLE FORT BEATDOWN: Improved the level a LOT:

-- Added subtle hints to the Super Gem in the Ninji section

-- Removed the Marimba Blocks, as they were introduced way too early in this level. Instead, they will now be introduced in Snowball Slam Jam.
-- The player is now healed at the start of each room, and twice every three rooms.
-- A lot of rooms have been heavily altered to reduce enemies, change layouts completely, and more. Rooms 2, 6, 8, and 9 are the ones especially altered.

- KLONDIKE CANNONRY: Improved the level.
-- Some Grinder cards were slowed down.
-- Repositioned and added some coin cards that were meant to be hit with the bomb.
-- Fixed vine heads being pushed by the tank's top part, which causes vine spawning to glitch and spawn vines diagonally.
-- Removed camera zone in the 3rd gem puzzle. It is replaced with the binoculars instead.

- Updated the launcher page slightly.

v1.0.0

FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Spoiler: show
How do you install the episode?
1. Download SMBX2 at http://codehaus.moe/, it must be the latest version (current: Beta 5 Patch 3 (with the Snifits hotfix obtained from here)).
2. Download the episode.
3. Extract the zip file using a file extractor, preferably 7Zip. Get the folder named CTPrismStarQuest and move it/copy it to the "SMBX2 Beta 5/data/worlds" folder. (You can click on the "worlds" shortcut in the SMBX2 install path to instantly get there.)

How do I update the episode?
No update patches are currently provided at the moment, but the installation process should be similar to how other episode patches work. For now, you can simply redownload the episode again if you need to get a new version.

Can I transfer savefiles across versions?
For the 1.0.0 HOTFIX, yes. Just copy your savefiles and progress.json from your episode folder to the new one.

My savefile needs repairing, since I can't get the achievements for 100% completion!
Due to a typo that existed across versions, users ended up with a bug that prevents completing Operation Iron Mouse from counting as part of 100% completion, and thus also progress towards a certain progression achievement. To repair savefiles for use with v1.0.2 Hotfix 2 and above:
1. Update the episode to v1.0.2 HOTFIX 2.
2. Open the episode, and type in either of the following cheat codes: ohnomysavefileitsbroken / fixmysavefileplease
3. Read the dialogue box that appears, then scroll to RESET on the question prompt that appears thereafter. Select it.
4. Please note that using this cheat code will reset your progress on 100% completion and the secret level achievement (where applicable). You will need to rebeat the last level of each world and the secret levels to count towards 100% completion. ONLY USE IF YOU ARE UPDATING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION AND YOU NEED TO REPAIR YOUR SAVE.

Can Captain Toad jump in this episode?
(Mostly) No. The gameplay is more or less based on Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and the Captain Toad's Adventures levels in Super Mario 3D World. HOWEVER, keep an eye out for any future gameplay gimmicks that may allow Captain Toad to jump!

What is the currently playing song in the level?
The full soundtrack is listed in the [0]_SOUNDTRACK Excel spreadsheet. You can check it out to see the full soundtrack, as well as see relevant comments where needed. Alternatively, you can toggle on Music Info in the pause menu to see the currently playing song.

What quality-of-life features are in this episode?
- You no longer get booted back to the world map when you die
- Even if using cheats, you are allowed to save
- Coin counter max value is increased to 99999
- Minimalist heads-up display option to show information about gems, items, etc. without taking too much screen space.
- Shake toggle to minimize shake effects

- Checkpoint select (base feature in SMWMap.lua)
- Faster world map movement

- needaboomerang - a new alias for "needahammersuit", which adds a Boomerang Flower.

Hey everyone, I'll be releasing a hotfix patch to remove remnant savefiles and fix some minor details. The patch will be releasing in a few hours and will be immediately obsoleting the original download. Please be patient - the episode's just released.

Added in 1 hour 49 minutes 53 seconds:
Re: [SMBX2] [Super Mario RE:MIX] Captain Toad: Prism Star Quest [v1.0.0 HOTFIX]
v1.0.0 HOTFIX is here! You can download it from the downloads section as usual.
This version completely overrides v1.0.0. Please use this one instead.
- REMOVED remnant savefiles and progress.json file. This caused some achievements to be unlocked early and test savefiles to be left in the game for some reason.
- Updated the copyright year on the intro/title screen
- Updated one of the loading screen tips to reflect a recent project
- Updated the launcher page slightly.

Do you keep getting a textbox that says "What's the square root of zero?"

I'll be sending in a new update (v1.0.1) to adjust difficulty on certain levels + fix some dialogue typographical/grammatical errors. There will also be some optimizations in the code, but shouldn't impact the enjoyment of the episode much. Will be preparing the update in a few hours.

Episode has been updated to v1.0.1. Please see the changelog for more information.
Spoiler: show
v1.0.1
This version overrides v1.0.0 HOTFIX. Please read the above method to transfer savefiles to the new version.

LEVEL-SPECIFIC CHANGES/FIXES
- KNOCK OUT ZONE: Nerfed the level heavily to match the difficulty of the world it is located in, based on user feedback.
-- Increased the timer from 2:20.00 to 3:00.00
-- As a consequence, the Speed Runner's staff remaining time has been buffed to 1:40.00
-- Super Gem quota has been nerfed from 0:40-0:20-0:00 to 0:30-0:15-0:00
-- Added a lot of turnip pluck patches to rooms that didn't have them. A lot of fireball pluck patches were also replaced, too.

- YOSHI'S PICNIC PANIC:
-- Changed a Baby Yoshi outside of the puzzle to have a different color, and moved it further away to discourage the player from trying to feed the puzzle berries to the Baby Yoshi.
-- Added binoculars to the 3rd gem puzzle to help players assess the puzzle better.

- BLAST THROUGH CAVE: Repositioned some unreachable coins.
- DISGUSTING DOWNTOWN: Changed the music filename to be compatible with certain computers that are unable to read them.
- SPURTING WATER OASIS: Added an extra veggie pluck patch near the 2nd Super Gem to allow the player to easily defeat the Pokey blocking the bomb block.

GENERAL CHANGES/BUG FIXES
- Fixed various typos in the intro cutscene, some dialogue in Toad Town, and a missing space in the backpack upgrade description.
- Fixed duplicate introPlayed variable being initialized in savedata as a result of an oversight
- Optimized intro check for new savefiles.
- Updated the binoculars:
-- Now uses the Super Mario 3D Land design, to make its intended purpose clearer.
-- The arrows on the binoculars have been outlined for visual clarity. Removed artifacting in transparent parts.
-- Added text to clarify that the player can press RUN to exit.
-- Added binoculars to certain puzzles (see above)

hmmm, I'm not sure what went wrong here. I think it might help to attempt reinstalling SMBX2 Beta 5 Patch 3 with the snifits hotfix and see if that fixes the issue or not. Not sure if it works though.

also experiencing a phenomenon where the game spontaneously crashes
the intro contains a seemingly misplaced message box that reads "what's the square root o" and the soundtrack for the starting area is a rendition of marble hill from sonic 1 with some voice bits of a girl screaming mixed over it, which i assume is also unintended. after walking around said starting area for a bit, the game simply closes without any kind of error message or crash report window
(for reference, i'm playing on the latest smbx2 version and have downloaded the 1.0.1 version of this episode)

edit: this is not actually a bug, please refer to my post below if you also experience this issue

I had the same issue, weird voices and then game crashes. I solved it by downloading latest SMBX2 in its latest version, it seems the issue is caused by updating the SMBX2 with all the patches throught the time instead of re-downloading the latest version with all updates pre-applied.
Just download full game and it should work fine: http://codehaus.wohlsoft.ru/downloads.html

after further research, i've found that this isn't an issue at all, rather there's some strange code that runs a checksum over some of the game files and intentionally "breaks" the game if it finds a mismatch

going to "scripts/psq_framework.lua" and dummying out splashScreenChecksum() to make it return 0x6EE2BA0C fixes this "issue" completely
in my opinion, features like anti-cheat or file integrity checks in smbx2 of all things are a bit silly, if not outright poor form

it's not an smbx2 thing, it's something programmed specifically by the creators of this episode, for the episode itself. to what end, i'm not sure, but it's an easy fix anyways so i don't think it matters that much

in any case, the bizarre checksum aside, since i'm now able to play the episode i'll say it's pretty fun so far! i might post here again once i've played through the whole thing but the level design has a real nice flow to it even in these early stages
