They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Hard underwater level

Postby RudeGuy » Sun Jul 13, 2014 3:08 pm

A hard level I make for crusher's project. Try it if you dare. It contains some good gimnicks where I spent hours to make them works properly. In fact, all in the level was made on purpose. Also I tested everything without godmode (and swearing), so all here is possible.

Oh, yeah. This is a kaizo level which isn't trying to fool the player.

CLASH:

Yeah, that clashes big-time. But since it's just supposed to be hard, that's OK. The level is INCREDIBLY hard, and not very enjoyable (still haven't beaten it but I'm guessing it feels really good to beat it.).

Oh yeah, thanks for tell me that. I'll update the link. But, apart it, there isn't clash anywhere. Also remember: it isn't impossible, I tested it.

How about you replace the lava with the spiky thing that was in "usage abilities"?

Oh well, ok.

@FanofSMBX, where is the spiky thing? It may replace the lava?

Level name: Hard underwater level

Me: *plays level*

... I don't know what I expected.

Hard underwater level

Gfx: 5/10

I get that it's supposed to be Kaizo, but that doesn't mean you can just let the level design slip. At least you had the dignity to make upside-down munchers.
The gfx were nothing special, but still very nice. I like that you went for SMW gfx to give it an actual kaizo theme (which basically means SMW with lots of munchers)
and the Rip van Fish were especially nice to see (but really hard to dodge).

Music: 3/10

The track was nice, but there was this weird noise in the beginning and having to hear that noise every time you restart the level (because you WILL die a lot) just killed this track for me.
I liked though, that you used MM music with SMW font, like you would find it in a SMW hack.

NPCs: 5/10

It was nice to see SMW hammerbro, Rip van Fish and Urchins in this level. It was not nice to have them all thrown into your face and each of them will instantly kill you.
It was nice to have them, but honestly they're nothing big.
There is really not much to say about them here, I will discuss this in the "gameplay" section.

Gameplay: 3/10

OH BOY. I was about to give this a 0/10.
Seriously, this would be a nice level for people who enjoy kaizo (whoever actually enjoys that shit). But this just doesn't fit into SMBX for several reasons. First of all:
NO FUCKING SAVESTATES. Kaizo levels are hard, this level is no exceptation. They are already hard if you ARE able to savestate. But this is just too much. Having the dignity to send me this level, asking me to review it and then telling me "I hope you die a lot".

Yes, this was a nice kaizo level, and everyone who likes (REALLY HARD) challenges will enjoy it, but this is nothing for the average SMBX player. I had to cheat and remove multiple enemies to get through the level without ragequitting. I know we aren't supposed to judge levels because of their difficulty, but there is Easy, Medium, Hard, and KAIZO. And kaizo just has no place in SMBX, because it's just way too hard and way too difficult to do without savestating. Expecting the player to start the level ALL THE WAY from the beginning (or midway point) every time they screw up is too much to ask for.

I'm gonna admit, this had some clever ideas (like the urchin tunnel) and it was over all designed in a good way, that's why I don't give this a 0/10.

Over all, was this a good kaizo level? Yes. Was it enjoyable? HELL NO. 4/10, moved to average. Even without taking the difficulty into account, this level was really just that: average.

God, finally a review.

I'd like to know how many times you ragequitted. Also, the screen you put makes me laugh.

I didn't keep count how many tries I needed, but I definitely took longer than half an hour WITH help from editing the level.

Hard Underwater Level:

GfX/overall design: 5/10

Looks like any old SMW level, which is fine and all but the filter at the beginning is kinda just...there. and the whole "munchers everywhere lol" just dont look right man

Music 1/10

really bad SMW conversion of Bubble Man on top of it having all this really wierd clipping and junk(most notably at the start of the song) I just took my headphones off and called it a day

Gameplay 2/10
the mushroom thing in the second half was nice, other than that there was nothing in the level that was impressive at all...

Difficulty 2/10
Im putting this here since you call this a "kaizo level" when its far from it. Lets go down the list of all the things wrong

-reserve poweup breaks the entire first half
-most of the gimmicks are just, mildly annoying but not difficult in any sense of the word
-the homing fish pose no threat at all and they seem to always move in a way where theyre just there moving in a diagonal pattern that doesnt hinder you at all
-the lack of trying to kill the player at every step, no trial and error,no memorization, just repetitive annoyances that arent interesting or fun to play through

Overall: 2/10

Please take a look at this video to get a grasp on the common failures of people who try to make these types of levels:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9aO-Fz6xI0
there was 2 of them but it appears to be gone now :< Point being do a little more research on a good kaizo level before trying again...

The level had to be played as small.
Mabel wrote:-most of the gimmicks are just, mildly annoying but not difficult in any sense of the word
Didn't you die at least 5 times? If you didn't broke the level (started as big, used donthurtme), you'd be died many other times.
Mabel wrote:-the homing fish pose no threat at all and they seem to always move in a way where theyre just there moving in a diagonal pattern that doesnt hinder you at all
The fish replace the paratroopa and so it is a bit buggy, but sometimes it kill you.
Mabel wrote:-the lack of trying to kill the player at every step, no trial and error,no memorization, just repetitive annoyances that arent interesting or fun to play through
When a kaizo have to be fun... Also I tried to kill the player. And you broke the level.
Anyways, I'll try to make this harder.
