Level name: Hard underwater level
Me: *plays level*
... I don't know what I expected.
Hard underwater level
Gfx: 5/10
I get that it's supposed to be Kaizo, but that doesn't mean you can just let the level design slip. At least you had the dignity to make upside-down munchers.
The gfx were nothing special, but still very nice. I like that you went for SMW gfx to give it an actual kaizo theme (which basically means SMW with lots of munchers)
and the Rip van Fish were especially nice to see (but really hard to dodge).
Music: 3/10
The track was nice, but there was this weird noise in the beginning and having to hear that noise every time you restart the level (because you WILL die a lot) just killed this track for me.
I liked though, that you used MM music with SMW font, like you would find it in a SMW hack.
NPCs: 5/10
It was nice to see SMW hammerbro, Rip van Fish and Urchins in this level. It was not nice to have them all thrown into your face and each of them will instantly kill you.
It was nice to have them, but honestly they're nothing big.
There is really not much to say about them here, I will discuss this in the "gameplay" section.
Gameplay: 3/10
OH BOY. I was about to give this a 0/10.
Seriously, this would be a nice level for people who enjoy kaizo (whoever actually enjoys that shit). But this just doesn't fit into SMBX for several reasons. First of all:
NO FUCKING SAVESTATES. Kaizo levels are hard, this level is no exceptation. They are already hard if you ARE able to savestate. But this is just too much. Having the dignity to send me this level, asking me to review it and then telling me "I hope you die a lot".
Yes, this was a nice kaizo level, and everyone who likes (REALLY HARD) challenges will enjoy it, but this is nothing for the average SMBX player. I had to cheat and remove multiple enemies to get through the level without ragequitting. I know we aren't supposed to judge levels because of their difficulty, but there is Easy, Medium, Hard, and KAIZO. And kaizo just has no place in SMBX, because it's just way too hard and way too difficult to do without savestating. Expecting the player to start the level ALL THE WAY from the beginning (or midway point) every time they screw up is too much to ask for.
I'm gonna admit, this had some clever ideas (like the urchin tunnel) and it was over all designed in a good way, that's why I don't give this a 0/10.
Over all, was this a good kaizo level? Yes. Was it enjoyable? HELL NO. 4/10, moved to average. Even without taking the difficulty into account, this level was really just that: average.
