What is the "lockdown light" exactly?

Basically Germany is currently in this half-lockdown state where private meetups are forbidden, places of public gathering like gyms and cafés are closed but schools and many public institutions (read, industry) are still open. Home office is "recommended" but not required and stores are opened normally with "strict" hygienic rules that are neither enforced nor abided.

where did you get that from, both bacteria and viruses can be cured with vaccines (with only a few exceptions like HIV) and in fact the first vaccine was developed against smallpox
I mean, viruses replicate inside of blood cells (or other host cells). To kill them would require killing the host cell

Ok, maybe I was thinking of the wrong terminology. Viruses typically have no cure, but vaccines can be effective to prevent and slow the spread of them.

That's something I don't get, the governments from a lot of countries are trying to avoid private reunions, people agglomerating in public spaces, and some countries are literally going back to confinement, but then they want to keep school and work presential, like, WTH? Do they really think schools are safe from a virus?

Ok so vaccines "cure" a virus / bacteria infection disease in the sense that your immune system is stimulated to develop antibodies bc you're given a dose of weakened or dead pathogens etc

so yeah there was a misunderstanding on the word "cure"

A vaccine is more of a prevention than a cure

Places where there are a substantial amount of people grouped together generally allow viruses to spread quickly

Yeah schools need to be closed too, but when Germany realizes this (if at all) there'll already be further damage

Hi guys! I am currently in my 3rd year of a Microbiology degree. This year a good portion of my studies is about the current pandemic, primarily towards the microbiological aspects of the disease itself and it's epidemiology.

If anyone has any questions about the disease I will answer as best as I can and I'm going to keep track of this thread :D

Folks, I know the internet is a place where most come to vent or to forget a bad day. Some use it without knowing really why and while that can lead to another can of worms that is not what I'm interested in. If you're surrounded by people that claim the COVID-19 isn't real you must understand this: the COVID-19 IS in fact real.

Simultaneously this virus isn't all-powerful. We're not so deep in the dark as we were 8 months prior, the WHO is finding out more and more information and updating their website as soon as they get more info on the inner workings of this virus. Therefore it's important to check for news in it at least twice a week and prioritize the information you find there rather than whatever you find on the news and some sketchy website. Celebrities and many more people that have not received proper medical education cannot tell you jack shit about this virus, and when in doubt in front of someone WITH said proper medical education telling you of this miracle product or strategy to either stay away or cure it you should always fact check with the WHO website.

It's important to take precautions but it's also to keep up with popular myths that lead nowhere both in terms of presenting fallacies about proper ways of preventing it as well as those that blow it out of proportion. Inform yourselves and teach those who are either ignorant or haven't found a proper source of information.

Take care!

Honestly the more we find out about the virus the more gruesome it gets, especially in terms of supposed long-term aftermaths and lack of reliable immunity after recovering from the infection

I'd say it's the most insidious virus in humankind's history

Don't know anyone who has but I can see the person getting COVID-19 again after recovering, it's a virus after all not a bacteria. But there hasn't been any confirmations of it causing long-term damage on the WHO's website. Also, according to the WHO...

Spoiler: show

So the school district I'm in is planning to let people physically come back to class in January. It's a bad idea in my opinion because, in a neighboring school district that let its students go back to school, there have already been 15 cases of coronavirus affecting students in those schools

It really isn't. People have lost their minds over it and others saw an opportunity to exploit that. A lot of people aren't taking it seriously, a lot are, and then there's people moralizing about it or just taking advantage of people.

I'm someone moralizing about both how the virus is a disaster in general AND the people that are making it worse. It somewhat demonstrated that there are so many abysmally bad people.

There's positive news also, Biontech and Pfizer requested permission for their vaccines.

Vaccines eh? I'm going to sound like those stereotypical parents that make outrageous claims against them, even though that is not my intention, and say I can't help but doubt their effectiveness. I'll wait it out and see where it goes.
