What do you think about hidden passages/stuff?

I think they are ok. I like challenges!

Hidden Passages & Stuff

Postby Fuyu » Thu May 29, 2014 1:12 pm

So, after a long time of being here, I've seen some people, who shall remain nameless, say that secrets and stuff we make on levels should be more obvious since it would be almost impossible to find/get them.

Now, I couldn't disagree even more with such statement. Throughout the history of gaming, many games have used many gimmicks to hid stuff, that if we employ such thought, we would pretty much disagree with the basic constructure of the video-game's level itself. An example of secret passages would be the classical nontransferable wall. This gimmick has been done repeatedly on many games, such as Castle of Ilussion Starring Mickey Mouse, many Megaman series, even official Mario and LoZ games. Saying these secrets should be more obvious is like asking for the game to be easier, and honestly, a game that it is not challenging isn't fun at all.

The reason being I'm making this topic is to see what do you guys think regarding this matter. Vote for any of the displayed options, and in case you want post your thoughts regarding it.

I agree. The only way a game is fun to a person is if it's challenging. That's why games that are extremely easy aren't any fun.

I think that nobody don't like of a good secret. I love secrets and Hidden Passages. For example. Cheato in Banjo-Kazooie. Yes, he give cheats, that make the game more easy, but is lot a fun search Cheato in Gruntilda's Lair.

Other example? Super Mario World is full of secrets. Secret Exits, Star Road, 3-Up Moons, Special World, Top Secret Area, and the L+R alternative ending.

For me, put secrets in games is one of the mainly things to do when making a game.

For me, there needs to be a balance. If it's too obvious, it's not very rewarding. If it's hidden too well, then finding it means wandering around aimlessly until I either discover it completely by accident or don't at all unless I look it up. I actually prefer obvious over that, because as a completionist, I find those practically luck-based secrets to be annoying. It feels like whether or not those secrets are found basically comes down to whether or not the game felt like giving them to me at that particular moment.

My preference meets in the middle. They're difficult to find, but the clues are reasonable to figure out but not simply handed to you. I also like the ones that are obvious, but involve a distinctly more difficult route or challenge to reach them.

Secrets are good. Example:

Super Metroid has many hidden items and moves.

In SMBX, There are times secrets are to hard for some people to get, and there are times when they are to easy to get! I prefer the ones that are annoyingly hard to get, but that may just be the fact I want to make a Walk-through for a SMBX episode!

In my episode, i have a plan to if you Enter and Exit of the Grandpa Koopa's Hut in Pipe Sewers before to talk with him, he talk that you are so annoying and give you a Cheat Code (part of my custom cheat code system without LunaDLL). This secret obviously only can be discovered to a bored guy, or if everybody gets angry to me ask how beat the game 100%

How do you make the cheat code?
