(Tutorial) How to make shadow enemies in 1.3.0.1 (newbies only)

Postby LGLMAKING » Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:44 am

This is a small series tutorials of an editor exploit I discovered myself (and If anyone mentioned it before, my apologies, I never read or saw anything regarding that) in the Legacy editor. It allows one to shadow or completely recolor the enemy. For each tutorial I will be using a goomba as a example. This is our testroom.
Image
Here are the projects (or rather one project so far):

1. Shadow entities in 1.3.0.1
Needed:
A download of SMBX 1.3.0.1
that's it!

step 1. search the gif file background-12 in your graphics>backgrounds folder (note: just to be sure, if you are actually using this technique never use background-12m, just to be sure. If you are testing the technique and you test the background-12m, post the result in the comments. I will change it.)
step 2. copy the gif file background-12 into your level file (e.g. Mayro's purgatory). Note that the level has to be in the level files too (More on that here viewtopic.php?t=10507)
step 3. rename the gif file background-12 into the npc ID of our goomba, which is npc-1
step 4. Save the game and play it with a clear background, such as smb3 blocks. If you did it right you will see this:

Image
good job! But your not done yet. As you see when you play it, the death effect is the same as a normal goomba's. So let's continue.

step 5. Make a copy of the "fake" npc-1.
step 6. Call it effect-2. This is the name of the goomba's death effect.
step 7. kill the goomba In our setup. If you did it right, its death will be as shadowy as ever.
Congrantulations: You've just created your first full texture edit! Use it as much as you like!

More tutorials coming soon!

This is just the equivalent of just making the NPC sprite completely transparent or black, while being too lazy to open any drawing software to at least save the file in the proper dimensions.

I think this is one of the most useless tutorials ever.

Enjl, there is a certain usefulness to the techique. It just isn't reserved for the ones that make more complex sprites. I, personally, never managed to downloado Paint.net as the download link seemed to go back to the website and vice versa. This is meant for those who aren't so great at spriting, and yet want to incorporatensure it into their levels.

You don't need paint.net for this. Or be anything at spriting. You just have to know how to use a mouse:

With paint.net you can just do CTRL + A + X + S and be done with it, but since you had trouble following links on a website, here's a direct link (freshly pulled from the getpaint.net website):

I think both techniques work because the npc''s shape has already been defined.

Added in 4 minutes 30 seconds:
Also, I wonder why I am getting the feeling that newbies are never taken seriously and are always shot down when trying to prove something. It's just, depressing.

If I wasn't taking you seriously I wouldn't be trying to explain better ways to get this result at all.
For the record: You might wanna switch to filling the non-transparent areas of a sprite with black instead in the future. SMBX2 and SMBX38A have .png file support which completely eliminates the need for mask files at all, and while masks ARE automatically inferred, using the paint bucket will allow you to learn other forms of recolouring as well (not to mention the fact that pngs are several times smaller in filesize than gifs (tested with a 32x32 black image you get about 900KB with a gif and 150KB with a png)).

Please be more constructive and respectful when criticising other people's work. Calling LGL's tutorial "One of the most useless tutorials ever" isn't helping anyone, now is it?
