Ok, after doing that, I got a bigger error message, along with runtime error 11, and... uh... some weird sound error. I think I did something wrong.

Did you make sure to update to the stabble 0.7.3 release before trying to download any dev builds?

The sound error is probably caused by random semicolons in the sounds.ini file in the SMBX root folder - they're somewhere around the fireball sound. If you delete them it should be fixed.
