Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Carnival Night Background

Basically my attempt of porting Sonic 3's carnival Night background.

Ah Carnival Night. All the cool ballons, classic music and... DAMN BARRELS.

This is pretty good, so good job here! I might do the barrel, because Carnival Night isn't complete without barrels!

uhh, Can you do the full tileset, and I hate the barrels! I may ise this if I ger the full tileset! Sonic 3 was my first ever PC game!

That is a very tall order since the tileset is one of the most complex of the sega genesis, let alone just trying to dissect it into SMBX.

So why don't ya do it by yourself? I could understand it if you not good at making gfx. Also why do you write like Vinyl.

I have converted a large part of that tileset already. It's not fully complete, but might still be useful for making a level.

I have to admit, I've never really seen how they can use this background for the Carnival level, it doesn't really feel like a carnival background, more like a futuristic city. In any case though this is a decent port Liraxus, well done.

Can you explain what you mean "write like vinyl"?

Edit: yeah, I am not good at graphics! I made a playable lemmy a long time ago over Mario, but it was terrible...

Oh, glad you all liked it.

To be honest, the thought came into my head of somehow making a fitting carnival night themed tileset from scratch, but it wouldn't do the original graphics justice IMO. Time to uh...get a bit technical.

How is sonic 3 so gorgeous? Well, lets look at the tileset I used for the background.

This pretty much explains the whole thing. Sonic 3 is tiled by using a 128 by 128 system, basically, they fill in tiles that are 128 pixels tall and wide, for comparison, a regular tile in SMBX is 32 by 32 pixels wide, but simply sprited to look 16 by 16 most of the time.

This literally means if anyone wants to attempt to port ANYTHING from Sonic 3 into SMBX, you'd not only have to break through the 16 bit art style we keep in SMBX for quality purposes, but you'd have to use 16 seperate tiles to render one tile used in Sonic 3.

Not only was Sonic 3 a really impressive game for the time, it was also a technical marvel that pushed the Genesis to its limits.

SMBX can't exactly do that, you guys can make a SMB3 themed tileset, but it really wouldn't do the level justice for just being retro-spritework eyecandy.

Well, actually this would be possible to make in PGE, the 128x128 tiles at least, and then save it to SMBX so all of the tiles are shown as 128x128.

Looks like it's time for me to rerip Starlight Zone, eh?

All the fun crap is in the background.

I really like this. It's Kind of rare to have a Sonic based Background like this especially animated ones. You made a good Job gaining those graphics together and make 'em onto functions. Good work!

Yoopee, i love this graphics dude. they are picture perfect from the genesis. but do not use the fucking barrels. they are bad.
