Use Paint.NET for making the graphics of the boss.

Whatever you do, don't use Paint. It's rubbish, has limited customisation options, and if you try to save straight to a GIF, the image will be distorted.

It's a type of file, like PNG or EXE.

He means Microsoft Paint, which comes with most Windows computers. Paint.NET is a separate program that is much more optimized for creating graphics. Microsoft Paint, however, is useless. Don't use it.

Doesn't mater what paint app you use, there is always a way to make it compatible with SMBX.
And although paint.net is very useful for creating sprites for SMBX, you can use any paint app to create them. I use a cruddy Mac paint app called Paintbrush and I make graphics fine.
