Episode Genres

Postby Marina » Thu Oct 30, 2014 2:31 pm

Shamelessly copied from Knux' forum.
Knux wrote:Nobody ever seems to class SMBX levels/episodes into genres. I think it's a nice little addition IMO.
For example...

Standard - SMBX episodes that use themes from Nintendo and other franchises, but mixes them up (like an episode with smb3 + smw elements). These are the most common types.

SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, SMW - Episodes that stick to a specific style, for example; Return To Dinosaur Land

NES Classic - Episodes that use NES graphics only.

Boss Rush - Self-explanitory...and we could do with less of these.

Joke - Again, self-explanitory. Too many Block Bollocks rip-offs though.

Kaizo - Extremely difficult levels, some verging on impossible.

Vanilla - Levels that are made using only SMBX's defaults, and no custom graphics. Some of these episodes might have custom music.

I want to see people's opinions on this, and any other genres I've missed out.
I personally think it's a great way of categorising things, so you know what episode you're getting yourself into!

This it possible to mix the genres (ex: kaizo + vanilla)?

Oh, you forgot the "super long levels with a bunch of slopes breathtaking aesthetics and perfect placement" genre.

Jokes aside, I'm all for the episodes that stick to one style, like SMB3-only games. They just stand out among the rest for some reason.

iirc If you use custom gfx, but it's the same as default, except that is different color, is also vanilla.

I would be down with adding separate forums for Boss Rush and Kaizo episodes, but not for anything else.

How about splitting "Standard" into "World Map" and "Hub"?

I guess I can state the way I would personally categorize levels, from best to worst:

FLAWLESS:
These are levels that are actually enjoyable to play and don't have any problems in design, etc.

FLAWED:
These are levels that are fun to play, but have glaring problems, such as missing effects for sprite swaps, difficulty spikes, an unbalanced midpoint, etc.

MEDIOCRE:
Although these levels are technically flawless, there is something about the design that makes them really bland and boring.

HEAVILY FLAWED:
These are levels that have at least one design flaw so severe that it causes the level to be unbeatable, or are joke levels.

If you think I didn't explain myself clearly enough, just ask me to elaborate on something, and I will.
