the best would be just the normal smw water replacing quicksand with a dark grey mask so everything is behing it.
(why quicksand? mario should be behind the water, so i take fore quicksand.)

Right. I'm afraid quicksand won't work as it doesn't have a mask. The foreground Checkpoint BGO pieces will work, though.

The Checkpoint BG have two parts. One is background and the another is foreground.
