Need some help with creating a boss

Postby Eyesoar » Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:06 am

What I'm trying to make is npc-15 (turtle miniboss in mario 3) but instead of running around on the ground I want him to float around the room. I tried changing gravity but then he just gets stuck in the ceiling. At the same time I'm trying to make some re-spawning npc-206 ( electric ball enemy in mario 2) surround the npc-15 kind of like a shield around him and if possible rotate in a circle at the same time. Those will not float either when I tried changing gravity but they just stick to the walls like npc-15... I'm guessing this is going to need some layers and events can anyone explain to me in detail what I should do exactly? I'm still very new to those I only know how to make blocks and items appear/ disappear.

I'm afraid what you're trying to do is somewhat beyond SMBX's capabilities. Nogravity won't work for Boom-Boom because he jumps but never falls back down, so he'll just keep going upwards in occasional bursts until he hits a ceiling. The Sparks also can't cling to the sides of other NPCs, even putting npcblock=1 on them doesn't help.

If you want to accomplish this, you're going to have to do a severely watered-down version of your idea, unfortunately. One idea you could use is putting Boom-Boom inside a formation of blocks or bricks, then have the Sparks orbit around the outside of that. You could have the player attack the protected Boom-Boom and Sparks using a bomb generator, perhaps.

Okay the blocks work but then how can I make those blocks invisible while still having boss inside and npc-206 circling it? I want to make it so that everything else can still go through the blocks so I can throw things inside

If you want to have other things go through the blocks, you'd need to use blocks that are only solid on top. But if you do that, then the Sparks can't circle them. If you use bombs as the player weapons, though, you can still damage Boom-Boom while using fully-solid blocks.

As for invisibility, just go to the graphics folder and copy over a certain block type into the same folder as your level. Choose one that has a mask, that's solid on all sides, and that you aren't using anywhere else in the level. Then in your level's folder, open both the block and its mask in an image editing program. If you make the block's graphic completely black and the mask completely white, then the block will be invisible in-game.
