resizing npc

when I change the height and width of an npc in the txt document how does it work? if I lowered the height would it be shorter from the bottom or the top? if I increased width would the npc be bigger on the left or right side ?

I think if you low the height, the NPC will be shorter from the top and if you low the widht, the NPC will be smaller from the right. But I think this doesn't apply for all the NPCs.
