You're gonna have to use BootCamp and install Windows, or use expensive software.
Blank: WINE won't work.

I use Parallels Desktop, a Windows emulator or Mac that costs money. If you're willing/able to pay, I'd highly suggest it; it runs really well for me.

If you're up for just editing right now, Wohlstand's editor works perfectly and supports pretty much everything in SMBX

Sadly not. I've been using Linux for quite some time and the two things I can't get to work with Wine are SMBX and .NET Framework.

Oh, that's a shame. Disregard my post above then.

I'm pretty sure michel posted a tutorial for installing SMBX on a Mac on NSMBX. However after the place was abandoned and closed, the tutorial's been wiped out, and I don't have it. But I am sure it did involve Wine.

Doing that requires quite a lot of memory and not all machines support virtualization. Best way to get SMBX working on a Mac is to use Bootcamp.

His Mac is brand new and would virtualize just fine. But like you said bootcamp IS the best way as you won't get optimal performance out of a virtual machine no matter how powerful your machine is.

It is possible to run it on wine, I got it working just today. Here's a download: http://www.mediafire.com/download/f19ew ... or_Mac.zip
You do need wine and winebottler installed though, and it crashes unless you check "Disable Sound" on the start screen. I'm working on trying to fix this though.
