It's official, Paint.NET hates me.

Postby HeroLinik » Tue Jul 08, 2014 9:39 am

So I have the latest version of Paint.NET, and I'm trying to recolor any old block, BGO or NPC. I do the usual steps: flood mode: global, tolerance: 0% and then off I go filling in the areas to recolor the item needed. But now there's a problem.

The fill colour that I want to use is now slightly leaking over other unwanted parts of the graphic, discolouring them, rather than just the area I want recoloring. So let's say I want to recolor a SMW grass tile for example, and I choose to make it blue. I fill over the orange area, but it's now leaking over the green area as well, as well as the small yellow areas inside the orange area.

How do I stop this happening and only recolor the area of the graphic that I want, like with the earlier versions?

Try lowering the tolerance.

He said his tolerance was at 0%. Now, I wouldn't know what your problem would be in Paint.NET, since I use Adobe Fireworks. Good luck with finding the answer though.

Paint.net 4.0 adds the smooth fill option, making the fill work kinda like the paintbrush tool. You can undo this smoothening effect just like you do on the paintbrush, using the little curvey symbol next to the tolerance.

This.

To fix it you have to deactivate the smooth fill option. Select the paint bucket and try looking for this icon here: Image
You can disable the smooth fill option there.

Thanks. It turned out it had to do with the anti-aliasing. It's fixed now, I can recolor graphics as usual again!

This option helps for some sort of things though, it's really useful for me to make some blood effects for the RPG Maker game I'm currently making. There should be an option to disable it permanently for those that don't want to use it though.

There are much better things to hate on in this update. For example selection rotation.

What's the matter with the select rotation?

Well, the matter with the selection rotation for me is that I always accidentally click on the rotation button in the middle when I just wanna move the selection around, and then I end up having to use the Undo button.

Oh, yeah that happened to me dozens of times. It certainly bugs me, but if I had to be honest that's the only problem I could find with the recent version. Along with the fact that I can't chose a certain zoom like I actually could on the previous version.

Paint works. Yes. But sometimes you'll need more than Paint can offer. Paint is only good for doodles and very basic image editing. If you need things like color transitions, rotated text or multiple layers, Paint won't be enough anymore.
An alternative to Paint.NET would be GIMP, though.

Pfff I installed Paint.NET on my grandparents' pc because Paint couldn't zoom in close enough for me to work with. It's REALLY limited.

Also Paint is really bad when it comes to making/editing SMBX graphics because you have the extra step of saving it as a PNG and then converting it to a GIF using a file converter. If you save a Paint graphic as a GIF then you'll get real bad 1x1 pixels all over the graphic.

Hey! That's what happened to me too! This was exactly what I was talking about. I couldn't do do nothing about it.

Not necessarily. I used Paint XP to make my graphics, and have no problem opening it up in Adobe Fireworks to save it as a GIF. If you have the patience to do that sort of stuff, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Paint XP doesn't necessarily decrease the quality of GIF files, in fact, it may even be better than Paint.NET's save style. The one we're talking about, and probably the only one that jumps into our minds is Paint Seven. In comparison to Paint XP, Paint Seven has a better relation user computer, but it craps some images when you try to save them as GIF.
