Just Starting Out

I'm not 100% familiar with this level editor, but I'm starting to learn my way around.

My question is, how do you get your world map to load on the startup of the game? I was working with it, to load the test level first, but when you exit the level, the map doesn't show up at all, so I'm thinking I may have messed something up.

So, create a folder in your "worlds" folder (in the SMBX folder) with the name of your project.
Put all levels, custom music, custom graphics/NPCs and the world map (and custom graphics/NPCs' folders) for the project inside of it.
Make sure that you also name your project via the world map in the level editor, and that the map is linked to all of the levels properly.
Now start up the SMBX game (not the editor) and your project should appear as a selectable episode.

the default location mario is on the map is set into a black box, is there a way i can set him in the world map wherever when the map first appears?

You need to select your level in the world map, and tick the box that says "Game Start". That way, Mario will start at that location.
