Any Sprite Sheet tips?

This time I'am asking are there any tips on have to make sprite sheets?
I have a sprite for the npc but are there any tips on how to make a sprite sheet or should I just experiment with random changes to the sprite?
I already made a custom npc myself, but I had a sprite sheet for that.
NOTE: I only need tips not programs or anything else.
