What's better: GIF+Mask or PNG?

I've seen both a lot here and I was wondering which is better for a level and/or episode standpoint.

unless you intend to make your episode backwards compatible with 1.3, i don't think there's any practical reason to use gif images.

Easy choice, png files.
Less graphic size (no "mask" files), and easier to play with opacity and stuff.
