I'm looking at this and I notice some things with the world map screenshots, several of them geographically look impossible. Just try picturing them at different angles without them seemingly floating and you'll see it also looks weird. Also, both your world map and level screenshots could use some decorations. Also, try to shape the islands so they aren't so "square."

The idea is that the facotries have changed the land and caused it to look unnaturally and manufactored, but thanks for the advice.

Surprisingly enough, this project is still alive. He talked about it on the smbxprojects server and edited the first post today.

Yeah, i just got alot of freetime to work on it now. Plus I just got back into making smbx levels. So i tried to put the project into smbx 2 and then updated smbx and decided to update the whole project and work on it a little more. Some improvements include Preventing Possible softlocks in Drilling station, Updated world map in some areas, and of course, the addition of a bonus level in world 2.

Cool idea!

Perhaps you could keep the grass/dirt/stone surfaces as they are but change the sides of each island to give the impression that each island is a steel base with the landscape perched on top. Or, have the islands appear to be floating above the surface of the water which will also add to the impression that they're constructed rather than natural landforms. Or if you mean them to still be natural landscapes but modified and shaped, maybe the outer contours of each island's surface should look artificial with the "natural" landscaping only in the centers. In any case, I think it's a novel concept and worth building upon further.
