Me too, I vaguely remember the yoshi with a hammer suit one.

It wasn't just that. It had a raccoon suit form for the Super Leaf and Tanooki Suit transformation, along with an alternate version for the Raccoon Yoshi, giving him wings instead, and the Hammer Suit being in an Icy form...
I'm curious as to what happened to the original sprites...

Maybe for the racoon and tanooki forms, you could give him wings like how when he eats a shell.
