Another Adventure (MORE screenshots and information!)

Postby DisOmikron » Sun Jan 22, 2017 5:04 pm

First of all, a small and short hello to all of you :D
Spoiler: show

Image

I. Overall:

"Another Adventure" is my first SMBX episode that I started working on about 6-7 months ago.

There are 42 stars to collect, spread over 8 small hubworlds, 28 levels and 6 extra (difficult) levels, whereas the main focus lies on:
1. Level Design (I'll just list the current credits here:)
- Most of the graphics used: AirSheeep, DisOmikron, NeoZ7, PROX, Sednaiur, Valtteri
- Additional Graphics: Blue Greed, Bumpty, Darkonius64, Deaddude, Emral, Eternity, Flying Brick, h2643, Marina, Mudkip, Intuition, Raster, reghrhres, Squishy Rex, Superiorstar
- Note: If, for some reason, I forgot to mention anyone, please let me know immediately. :)

2. Creative Gimmicks
3. Custom Music
4. Exploring a world full of talking NPCs and my profile pic as the main antagonist (because why not.)
5. Hopefully some fun and enjoyment :D

II. Story:
Spoiler: show
Image
It was just a normal day when Mario suddenly ends up being in a bizarre new world, a world created by an unknown guy with some serious issues. It's your quest to collect stars, explore the world and finally find the creator of this all.

III. Music
I'm already uploading one song per day to YouTube, in case you need some sound to the following screenshots. Since I'm a musician, the soundtrack is one of the biggest things about this game. There is a total of 33 different original compositions to be featured in this game. So check out my YouTube channel in case you're interested.
Spoiler: show
IV. Additional Information
- Can only be played as Mario or Luigi
- Can be played as a multiplayer game (The extra stages don't work properly, but you could play through the normal stages, theoretically.)
- SMBX Version used: SMBX 1.3.0.1

V. Example Screenshots
Spoiler: show
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
I'm also going to upload a small trailer for this episode to YouTube in a few days or a week. So stay tuned for more!
Feedback is highly appreciated,
Dis

I like the boss music, honestly, it's one of those types of music I have a hard time composing, but you managed to pull off a nicely composed boss track. It seems like it would fit a Paper Mario game too.

As for the level design, you seem to like to mix different styles, which technically isn't a bad thing to do, but there are instances of clash in your levels, like using SMW Switch Blocks next to SMB3 Item Blocks. Due to their different art style they look out of place. There's also the evident gargantuan donut block which is 16x16 pixelated ... this makes me wonder how can you think it's fine to leave it like that. I would change that, stick to a certain pixel-size. NOTE: I'm aware Nintendo kind of doesn't care about this, but as you will come to find out about it yourself, this community doesn't take pixel-size difference that lightly =P

Moving onto a more positive note, I like the level design, how some of the levels seem to be played really spark my interest, and I think I would play it once it's done. The only nitpick I have is regarding the credits, do you think you could change my name in there? I'm not longer called Natsu, but Intuition (pulling the Valtteri card here).

Glad you like the track! Unfortunately, the boss battles are not that creative at the moment (that's why there's no screenshot for them here), but well, the game is not yet finished.

As for the level design, I tried to stay consistent with some things, like coins, item blocks etc. which all share SMB3 graphics throughout the entire game. And I tried to use as much SMB3 graphics as I could, as you probably saw (apart from custom graphics of course). But there's always a special gimmick in each stage (simple moving platforms, firewalls, riding frozen bullet bills, giant objects, etc.) so I, personally, didn't find it too bad mixing different styles for these gimmicks, actually. But that's probably a matter of taste? I'd honestly find it worse if you changed the SMB3 item blocks to SMW item blocks for that one stage only, but I get what you're saying! :)

Apparently, I got your graphics before you changed your name :D I have changed it now.

And thanks for the constructive criticism, that is why I'm posting this here. Someone might dislike something that I probably wouldn't even think about changing, so I highly appreciate that!

Glad to hear that! :D There's not much left to be done actually, the boss fights have to be a little more interesting (+ the sprites) and I have to improve some things regarding the graphics. :)

I'm honestly quite surprised how you were able to compose music for your own levels! I can't even make a track without messing everything up. Good job designing the episode.

Thanks! I've been composing video game inspired music for about 8 years now, it's all a matter of practice! :)

Hey, I've decided to show you all some more screenshots from my game Another Adventure and give you some information about the stages that I selected to show. :) And I just wanted to point out again that this episode is mainly about music and level design, not graphics. There are custom graphics in there, but not too much.

LET'S BEGIN.

1. First of all, we have the ghost house level Endless Enigma. You start and see 5 doors in front of you. Although all lead to the same room, they bring you to different locations within that room. In order to progress, you need to find 3 coloured blocks. Side note: This is the only labyrinth-like level in the game and I even had to draw it first, so that I keep track of what I'm doing :D
Spoiler: show
Image
2. Next, we have Fiery Fort, which is my personal favorite and I needed a lot of time to create it. It's, well, a fiery fort with those long grey blocks that switch the bottom and the top. Unfortunately, this is the only level that just doesn't work when playing it with 2 players.
Spoiler: show

3. The third level I selected is called Finster Fort, and also took me a lot of time to make. It's another castle level, where the room switches between light and dark every few seconds.
Spoiler: show
Image
Image
4. Next up, we have Floral Fields, a grass themed stage at night. The main gimmick are those blue pipes which can be pulled out of the floor and carried around.
Spoiler: show
Image
5. Geistergarden is a level in world 6, Gruesome Garden. It's mainly about level wrap, spinies and ghosts with objects attached to them.
Spoiler: show
Image
6. It's all about solving 8 riddles in the stage Haunted Hotel, totally not inspired by Paper Mario TTYD or something like that.
Spoiler: show
Image
7. The only casino themed level in the game is called Risky Road. Here, the main focus lies on switch blocks, moving dice and... talking npcs.
Spoiler: show
Image
8. The last stage I'm going to show is the first one of the 5 optional special stages, called Shoe Challenge. The switch blocks above are constantly moving right, you have to run through those courses as fast as you can, while objects/npcs might not always kill you, but steal precious time from you. The better and faster you are, the more you are rewarded at the end!
Spoiler: show
Image
9. Additional hubworld images from Moonlight Valley (World 1), Funkytropolis (World 2) and Magma Meadows (World 5).
Spoiler: show

Hopefully, I'll get the game finished in february. I'm putting a lot of effort into this little episode, so I hope you will like it! :)

Yes, they're just the normal ones but about 8 times as big. I have to admit that giant objects are not the most creative gimmick you could use for a level, but why not. :P The pixel size of those donut blocks is changed to 2x2 though.
