SMB1 8-bit Grass (1.1)

Postby Fchez » Sun Oct 09, 2016 2:05 pm

This is a simple re-stylizing of the default SMB1 Grass.

I redid the pack to better fit with the nes limitations
Use this with other 8-bit GFX for a nice effect.

(This is supposed to be used by PGE because of it's feature for custom tilesets)

You can use this GFX Pack as long as you give credit to me.

That looks pretty good actually. I could see this being used in an 8-bit styled level.

If you want to make this fit with NES-esque graphics then you should use the proper colors. The nes had a very limited palette and it resulted in very vibrant colors that pop out at you. Your tileset's colors are very murky and brown.

What I'm trying to say is: It looks like crap (The dirt especially)

Also your shading is non-existent, work on that.

As Sanct said, this isn't 8-bit because it doesn't use the correct palette and still needs some shading

today in smbx forums postings: everyone misuses the term 8-bit in one way or another
does this use the 8-bit palette?
no. in fact, it doesn't use the 24-bit palette, either.
is it 8-bit style?
yes (minus colour). 8-bit shading style is restricted by having 4 colours (3 + alpha in most cases) per tile (8x8 or 16x16) to work with. This tileset could use more colours on some tiles, but it is not required.
IT ABSOLUTELY NEEDS SHADING?!?!?
Exhibit 1
Exhibit 2
Exhibit 3
Exhibit 4
Exhibit 5
will this fit with 8 bit styled graphics?
yes
will this fit with smb1 8 bit graphics?
no. you can already tell in the screenshot that the SMB1 block sticks out.
then again you COULD argue
yes, as much as everything on these forums that's advertised as smb3 styled fits with smb3 sprites: only for people who don't give a shit

then again
style mixing isn't bad
style misnaming is misleading
