Vyvuto wrote:This has probably been discussed before, but seeing how we all (probably, at least) are at least somewhat acquainted with SMBX, do you think that Mario Maker will be able to fill a niche that SMBX doesn't that justifies its $60 pricetag for you? I was dead-set on buying this game but ever since I was recently introduced to this program, I'm starting to feel less and less of that need. I do think that Mario Maker has some cool elements, such as the fact that NPCs can be resized, placed on top of each other, and placed inside blocks once on top of each other, along with lots of other crazy stuff like that (that can't be achieved with my extreme lack of knowledge of coding levels for SMBX). Additionally, I think that the fact that Mario Maker is an official Nintendo game instead of a fangame will cause many more people to get Mario Maker than SMBX, causing there to be more and more good levels. (That does mean that there will also be more crappy levels to sift through, but you gotta have the good with the bad.) I dunno, though. Suddenly, my enthusiasm seems waning, especially since Mario Maker lacks somethings that SMBX has (custom GFX and music being one of the biggest advantages of SMBX IMO). I dunno though. What do you all think?
It would be an ordeal to make work with the kind of laws that we have about intellectual property and copyright. There are plenty of new graphics (and even new music) that fill in this void in my opinion. For example, just the other day I heard Nintendo's take on the Airship theme in Super Mario World's musical style.
Given all of the new content, and the free online support and community regulation, and the 100 levels it comes with, I believe it's worth that price, though I think the less informed will look at trailers and think "Why on earth would THIS be 60 dollars?" Considering Captain Toad was 40 dollars.

Worth the price? Definitely! Not only is this a level editor per say, but it also includes a pre-installed game too, pretty much. NSMBU for example only has about 80 story mode levels, while this, although not a game, more of a level pack, contains 100 Nintendo built levels. Your practically getting a game, an editor and online support, plus whatever else Nintendo throws in there at the last minute.
And then if you think about it, technically, you will eventually be able to play millions of levels made by both Nintendo and gamers across the world.

Yeah, pretty much. I just think the hubris of the everyday knee-jerk opinion can get pretty impressive at times, so I question if people at large will see the value in that.
Anyway, I'm curious about 2D Mario's future at this point. Is this outright the last of 2D Mario, or the herald of something new and different? I don't know how they can get away with another New Super Mario Bros. at this point, so what if they retired that formula and took Mario elsewhere?

I can't say I thought about it very much, but the NEW series is certainly growing old. Sure it brought back older elements, but they were recycled and overused way too much. I assume that with the release of Nintendo's next console there'll be a Mario game that shows us where exactly the series will end up going. There's a lot of talk about SMG3, there's plenty of room for a sequel to Captain Toad, and by the way it was received it will get more attention in the future for sure. I don't think the 2D games will end, simply because they are what Mario was and kinda still is all about. Hell I'd be up for more free roam games like SM64 or 3D World, but I know it certainly wouldn't be the end for the Mario series.

Yeah. The thing that keeps me hopeful is that some of the most beloved experiences are from when Nintendo strayed from core traditions. I cite the Super Mario Land series, Yoshi's Island (before it became its own brand), Link's Awakening and even Majora's Mask. If I can expect anything along those lines for the next 2D Mario I'll be pretty psyched.

I would kill for SMG3. I feel like the 2D games are just the same thing, every time. If Nintendo was willing to make out-there levels with different graphics and different mechanics and playstyles (it's hard to get across what I mean but just a different feeling of the level), similar to what could be found in ROMhacks and SMBX levels, then I'd love to see that. The problem is that Nintendo never does that with its 2D games. Hopefully, because the levels pre-included with Mario Maker aren't constrained by thematic necessities (like having to have 10 ice levels, 10 desert levels, etc), Nintendo will branch off more into this type of level design. What I *would* love is SMG3. I've only played SMG2, but I loved how diverse and varied the 3D platforming was in that game, along with the graphics. Hell, the graphics alone would make me want to get SMG3. The only problem is that eventually, the Super Mario Galaxy series will have to run stale, just as the 2D Mario series seems to have done.

This has been known since the first trailer of the game.

Looks like not even Super Mario Maker is safe from cutoff rip
Honestly I have really mixed feelings about this. Sure it's a great idea to have an official level creator by Nintendo, and there sure is some cool stuff that SMBX can't do, but I don't know if I really want to spend $60 on something that I can just get for free on here. Also I'm not exactly the most informed about SMM, but how powerful is it? Custom graphics certainly aren't a thing, and from what I've seen so far you really can only create basic levels with it without having advanced gimmicks like the ghost house elevators for example, given that that isn't gonna be a placeable item in the game.

I'm half interested in Super Mario Maker and half interested in what it could inspire in SMBX. I think it puts fresh new eyes on the kind of things that can be done by expanding into an official audience, and can potentially paradigm shift how WE do things. I'm sure many things in SMM can't work in SMBX, but I'm sure a lot of it can. I certainly look forward to comparing them. SMM is also a better environment for learners, which could bring people into SMBX who grow tired of SMM's limitations and want to do even more.
Also, all of the unique additional content and community access is really what sells this for me.

I like how every objects in this game can have interactions with one another, which makes the game even more interesting to play. Though this game still has some limitations in it, plus I don't have a Wii U. Therefore I won't be buying this level editor.

I'm very fond of the style mechanic because you can't mix styles. That immediately counts out the mess that would result if people were able to mix, say, NSMBU and Mario 3. That's how it should work in SMBX, really. And I really love how they made new sprites and music for the games that lacked the enemies/objects/music the other games had, merely because I find it fascinating.
We're bound to compare this to the fan-made editors. Mario Maker is missing some basic things that the fan-made editors have like slopes, overworld water physics, scripts, world map... And the level type choices are quite limited as well, missing some obvious types like desert and woods. But I understand Nintendo's choice to focus on the enemy/tile diversity rather than more complicated things. It's aimed at kids, afterall, with the editor/hacking communities clearly in mind as well. But mostly kids.
Despite being limited in some aspects compared to SMBX, I still want to buy it. It's the official Mario editor after all, made by Nintendo. The creators of Mario probably know what a fun Mario editor is like. I'm sure I'll enjoy making and sharing a few levels with it, even with the limitations. You don't necessarily need scripts to make a fun level, or to have fun making a level.

MM and SMBX will both have different fetures and limits, for example,in MM you can put bowser in a clown car,but not in SMBX,in SMBX you can play as 5 different characters, but not in MM, so to clarify,MM can do things SMBX cant,SMBX can do things MM cant,Finnaly, nintendo will most likely put an end to SMBX once MM comes out to draw more attention to MM and avoid having people getting their best Wii u game for free.

Uhm you can use custom gfx in smbx to have Bowser and his clown car which mm doesn't have.
There aren't slopes.
No custom music.
No Link playable.
MM will not put an end to smbx bc mm is far more limited then smbx + we got Wohlstand and his company who is working on PGE which is even far more better then mm and smbx combined.
All i see mm is making a use for is to create a shitload of kaizo levels and knowing that nintendo has a fanbase from very young age i expect also some really bad levels.
Also pretty sure MM will get dlc which also cost a shitload of money.

If that's the case,Nintendo will put an end to SMBX because MM Is more limited and more expensive.

Nintendo already put an end to SMBX, officially.
I guess we know why, now. (maybe)

i mean this is just wrong. you can literally put every single enemy in a clown car in mario maker.

yes, because the smbx fanbase is known for being very old, mature and creating high quality levels.
