or maybe you just take the sprite online from the fighting games. Those contain multiple animation sprite. the problem is that those are quite small ( around 64*64 pixels )

You're right. Although, when I tried to make a explosion effect sprite with more than 40 frames the rest didn't show up... It only shows 30 frames.
