It's not a sequel to Mario Paint because they explicitly stated this is going to be its own game that borrows elements from Mario Paint. In other words, it's not going to be a direct continuation. I can see this having a music composer for levels though.

Yeah but he never explicitly said it would not be.
I look at the hints.
The demo had a title screen that was VERY reminiscent to Mario Paint, he even mentions putting things from Mario Paint.
You gotta learn how to read between the lines with Nintendo, they hint at ideas and say little things.. couple that with all the stuff inserted from Mario Paint already (dog face, rocket screen eraser.. and so on).
But we'll see how it goes upon release.
Still got a year to go, and there have been tidbits of info leaked ever since NSMBU was released, people thought it was part of that game and we never seen it.
So they more then likely have a LOT more done they just are not showing off, and given how it's got another year until release, i think it's safe to say there will be a lot more than what the E3 demo showed off.
I think that demo was more or less to get a public response to see if they're on the right track.
But they should have known such a thing would get a lot of attention >_<, it's mario for crying outloud.
I find it funny they went with "Mario Maker" Maker... maker.. that's something that has been used for awhile.. there IS an RPG Maker series after all.. .. i just find it odd that they would go with Maker. But considering how it's supposed to be mario stuff, i guess calling it Platformer Maker would have been odd.

Mario Maker seems like a pretty good name to me, because of its simplicity, alliteration, and the obviousness of what it is. It is somewhat uninspired given other level editors and engines like RPG Maker, though, I suppose.

E3 says it. Mario Maker is on Wii U, but since it's coming at 2015, there might be some more things added to it in the future. Based on the E3 video I saw a while ago, it's just regular Mario platforming. They might make it cooler as the game is still in progress.

And i posted info straight from the directors mouth about what they want to do with it, he hinted at a lot of Mario Paint like features..
Anyone who thought what was announced at E3 was all we were gonna get, needs a brain scan done for abnormalities lol

Well, I can see Mario Maker going to make a lot of fans happy with an official level maker that would allow some of their wishes of a personalized 2D Mario game come true. But I want to note that fans hacked Nintendo's games for many years now (18-24 years?) and some have coded theor own fangames to get their fix of a personalized Mario game.
Point is, Mario Maker is only making fangame creation mainstream. Its not really adding anything new to an already-established deviant practice.

How is this IN ANY WAY related to SMU?

Well, they're both Mario level editors. But you can't say that Mario Maker is either better or worse than Super Mario Uprising because neither of them are finished.

Considering that his reasoning behind the previous title was that it wasn't serious, I woudn't take this one too seriously either.
And can't the throwbacks to Mario Paint just be considered throwbacks? This game doesn't have to be a direct sequel to incorporate old memories.

It's got the option to switch between the original and New Super Mario Bros. style graphics. I saw a video somewhere and I'll try and link it back here.
EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLS458ekSEI
From what I can tell, it looks like it's going to be cross platform. It would work well for both platforms. Imagine being able to build the level on the Wii U gamepad and view it/play it in real time on your TV screen. The same would work well for the 3ds with the bottom screen being the editor and top being the view/play screen.
And for those saying that Nintendo got lazy with this that's a bold thing to say. Creating editors are not easy (trust me) and if Nintendo is being lazy for fulfilling what the fans have wanted for a long time then I guess you can't consider yourself a true Nintendo fan. I applaud Nintendo for this and I now have another reason to buy a 3ds or a Wii U. The Wii U is actually looking better than both the PS4 and Xbone right now (not that it matters as I play PC anyway).

Nintendo showed off a new trailer for Mario Maker, featuring a ton of new features in addition to SMB3 and SMW themes.
To the people who said this would be really limited, I honestly don't think it will be anymore.

Well, this is gonna be extremely fun once I am getting this to go on my Wii U Console especially that I will surely get a Wii U LAN Adapter to play Online for real after 24th of December and gaining much greater possibilities to utulize the Wii U Gaming experiences...
...we just have to wait on 2015 for sure.

I actually consider Lunar Magic to be first. It may be much more complex, but it has a TON more features than SMBX.

Holy shit this actually looks really cool and versatile now. It'll be especially awesome if you ca connect the levels using a world map or something and make an "episode", you know.

From a design standpoint, it's still limited, but from an aesthetic standpoint, it looks like you can do a lot more neat things with it, and that's nice.
I talked about this before, and my opinion on it still stands: I do appreciate this existing. It's a nice little "do whatever you want without caring about anything" thing. None of that "have to be good at making stuff" nonsense. I think what they've done is put in everything SMB1 and then went further to create innovative ways to use its toolset, so while still basic, it has extra variety, so it's not just a carbon copy of our fan crap.

HMMMMMM.. Now there couldn't POSSIBLY have been a fangame on PC that inspired this now could there... certainly not with an "X" at the end now could there?
