Need judges for a contest dealio.

Postby DarkMatt » Fri Oct 17, 2014 2:01 pm

Okay here's the quick lowdown. I have an idea for a contest to run meself. Problem is, I do not trust a single one of you to judge worth half a damn, so before I begin, (which will be around the time my thread for CC9 ends) I should go poll for contest judges now.

Here is what I ask of ye:
-Submit to me a PM with TWO pieces (reviews) of level critique: one positive, one negative. This is any review for any level you did on this forum. It'd be better if you gave me something that traces both good and bad, but I still need two pieces.
-You will also need to write a short blurb as to why you are better than any other shmuck I know at judging mario levels fairly. Just write about what sets you apart. Don't try to kiss my boots. Also the target length should be a normal paragraph. Don't give me an essay nor give me a sentence or two. Explain why you're a good critic.

And here's what I expect of ye:
-You should be able to judge a good amount of short levels within a week. If you cannot do this because you either don't have the will nor the time then you really shouldn't apply.
-You will need to use a rating system I will give you. We can talk about how it'll come into being, but if you liked how I reviewed levels in this thread, then you won't mind using it.
-I expect a formal conduct when dealing with anything from working with your fellow judges to interacting with other users to so on so forth. If you start childish shit I am going to put you on the "Never Trust With Anything" list.

After that? You wait. I will pick judges a little before the contest starts. I'll go with either 3 or 5, and this may or may not include me.

As for what it's about? Well, have you ever tried making a short and sweet level in under a week? Now what if I made you use custom graphics I pick out instead of whatever you want? And what if I told you you have to do this 6 times?

Also a notice: Yes. This is considered an official contest if it gets off the ground. I need your help though, so send in those applications.

And why should one devour his time into this? I mean, what do you get? I'm not sure being a level judge is fun if you even had to write reviews about levels you don't want to review.

If you don't want to review levels why did you became a judge for a contest or a level judge in the first place (if you wanted to)? If you don't want to become a judge for DarkMatt's contest, it's fine. I recommend to don't post this kind of messages, as they're a bit useless.

Yeah, makes sense. Ok sorry for my useless post. I just think that I'd personally want to be a level judge only if I have to review only a part of the levels. Let's say if there are 10 levels, I could review 5 of them and a different judge can review the other 5?

If you have to review 10 levels, you and you only have to review all of them, if you are a judge for a contest. If you are a judge in the forum, you can review some levels and let the other judges review the others. Also, since I'm not a level judge, I can't answer to your questions, so I'd like if you ask your questions about level judging to TNTtimelord or Valtteri instead.

Huh? what's this? your hosting a level contest? But you won't have any time for the insults of the community contest!
Cool idea though.

I think he said he's hosting it after CC9 is over.

To clarify, this will be separate from the seasonal contest series. I will host the Winter Contest (Level Contest 10) in December normally.

Yeah, this definitely isn't gonna be conflicting with the normal community contest.

I've gotten bumpkus so far. Come on I know some of you got what it takes.

This sounds like an interesting idea for a contest and a much needed change in form from the structure of the previous ToBs. While I won't apply for a judging position (my SMBX activity is zilch ATM), I would participate in this should this get off the ground.

Though I do have one question - would custom music be allowed, or would you pick this too?

I would probably allow custom music, but here's a caveat: that would give people with greater musical knowledge an edge in what is otherwise a contest of primarily level design. So while you could include music, I probably won't factor music into judging.

The best way to work the custom music thing would probably be to only allow Mario music, vanilla or custom. That would allow custom music but not allow people with a greater musical knowledge to have an advantage.

I plan to send in an application, because, you know, I want something to do, but there's something said in the original thread that I don't exactly understand.

Are you wanting something like a review that divides the positive and negative (like pros and cons sorta-speak)? Or can I not just read at all?

Probably the latter but we'll see.

I would say it's the latter yeah.

I'm merely asking for two reviews, preferrably one for a good level and one for a bad level. Having a review point out the good and the bad can be used for either the one for good or the one for bad, but I still need two, and they can't both be positive or negative.

In other words, I need X review and Y review. A review can be XY, but no 2X or 2Y, if the maths talk makes any sense.

Someone woke me up to remind me this is still a sticky.

Thanks for your interest, but due to circumstances, this is going to happen later down the line.

(It's because I'm on vacation.)

Oh and, Merry Christmas.
