Open world Mario?

Postby Darksword231 » Sun Oct 12, 2014 11:33 am

I have an idea for an open world-ish smbx episode with things like dungeons and quest giving npcs and maybe even item shops and stuff. now, due to the limitations of smbx some of these things may be difficult and/or impossible, but i would like to see what people can do. i would try and do this myself but i can't as i already have a project under development. I hope to see some good episodes from you guys.

I try something like this before much time and i think is not too hard,i mean you can make a level with 20.000 blocks thats enough also you can put warps to another world in the end of every place if you won't make a whole world in a level.

Oh, I see now. Open worlds in SMBX can be made, but you need to remember that no one likes very long levels which takes 1 hour to beat. And also, the level might can lag.

Sadly, the real number of blocks you can put in a level are only 16384, if I remember correctly.

I have a feeling that you are trying to emulate the Zelda 2's Gameplay Style but in SMBX but I also could be wrong though. Tecnically there is a way as of how to do something like this but of course it has it's limits. I only talk about the World Map though.

Here are the exact limit of the World Map: http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... =69&t=2130

You'd have to use LunaDLL and it's multiple checkpoint and variable storing functions to make this really.

You don't have to use LunaDLL for something like this, And he didn't say anything about multiple checkpoints.
And can you stop suggesting that people should use LunaDLL? Its really starting to get annoying.

This is like either squishing peanuts and butter together or using peanut butter from the jar. Yeah you can technically use the former but it is very annoying to eat and rudimentary. Let's see he could use stars (only one per section), which have to be in the same level as what they affect, and increment the star counter, and if he doesn't use multiple checkpoints this episode is gonna be annoying if you die.

I think he is trying to create a world like Smash Run in SSB4 but even bigger.

I'll start asking you a simple question, by open world you mean like the whole world being in multiple levels to which you can warp form one to another instead of having a hub or world map, is that right? If that's the case it is actually possible, all you need to do is place instant warps at the end of each level's section and you'll be done with it. If you do not refer to this kind of gameplay I would like some more detailed explanation refereed to what you're trying to accomplish.

Actually that could work very well, unless each section is very linear, then the open world mechanic is ruined.

because, when i say open world, i mean, like what you said, but without a 100% linear story. so like, yeah theres things like bosses and stuff but the quests given to you to defeat the bosses (apart from the one for the final boss, which will be given to you at the start and completed at the end of the game) can be taken an completed at anytime.

If that's the case there's no way to do that. If you plan to make the player go from level to level the system is pretty much ruined because SMBX does not have global events which are needed in order to create such system. The only way to make that is in one only level, but if you do that the level would rather exceed the maximum amount of blocks, BGOs, etc and mostly lag a lot. If you still wish to make some sort of open world game you should wait for VSMBX or PGE to be fully released. Or use LunaDLL if it actually lets you do such thing, I don't know since I don't use it.

well, i was going to do the quest system as follows: 1. player talks to npc. 2. npc gives quest (lets say, for example, go into a cave and kill a boss) 3. in another section of the same level, the entrance to the dungeon opens. 4. you go thrpugh and the level containing the dungeon starts. 5. you kill the boss and a star and door appear along with the text: "Quest complete" 6. you go through the door ad are teleported outside the dungeon.

I guess you could make sort of 5 quests for that, but you won't be able to add that much considering that if you do so the level might lag. That's the main problem.

How about Open Mario without much story and still have to fight Bowser in the end? No quests, just going from one area to another, any way you can or want. That's my plan for my big project, at least. Could that work?
