I'm pretty sure it's possible, and I think I have a pretty good idea of how to do it, but I would like someone to tell me how to actually make an episode which can be played properly without just using the test button, and at the same time an episode with a playable world map. I am trying to make a little episode for my friend to play and I would like to know how to make it playable as an episode. Thanks!

To make an episode.
first:a folder to put the levels and the folders of the levels to put custom graphics.
second:go to level edition and next "file" button there is a "mode" button when you press it will show you "level editor" and "world editor" press the "world editor" to make a world map,if you make a level before then save it and then change to world map editor.

There is no way you can test a World Map during the World Map Mode. The only way you can play the World Map for real is that you have to open the SMBX Program and play the regular Game instead. If you open your own SMBX Episode, you will get into the World Map but make sure that there is at least one Level has a function where you can start with on the world map or else you start extremely blindly where you can't proberly start with.

What I meant was, how do you make an episode? Rather than, how do you test a world map?
So Dimitris had the closest answer, but thanks everyone for asking.
If anyone can elaborate on how to make your own episode which is properly playable, then please post!

To make a episode you need to make a folder first then put level, level folders, world map and custom music (is not necessary level folders and custom music) then the folder with all this you put it on "worlds" folder in "smbx" folder (<-- many folders)

While you have opened SMBX Level Editor, either go to Mode at the top left and press "World Editor" or for quick Command, press "Ctrl + W". If you do, a "Proceed" sign will appear that says "All unsaves changes will be lost, proceed?". Press "Yes" if you want to proceed or "No" if you want to go back to the Level Editor (but only if you haven't saved your process on your Level Maker).

Here's a step by step tutorial:
> Create a new folder in the "worlds" directory included with SMBX. Its name is irrelevant in-game but you should give it your episode's name or whatever.
> Put all levels relevant to your episode inside this folder.
> To add custom graphics/NPCs that apply to your entire episode (or the world map), place the images/text files inside the episode folder. If you want to add custom graphics/NPCs that apply to a single level, create a new folder inside your episode folder with the same name as the level file (so if your level file is named "stageone.lvl", the customization folder would be called "stageone"), and place the images/text files inside this folder.
> To add custom music, place the audio file inside the episode folder. MP3s are preferred but SMBX supports a couple of other audio formats as well.
> Go to the world editor inside the SMBX editor and create your world map. While placing a level tile, make sure you link each one to the appropriate level file, using the exact file name.
> If your episode includes collectable stars, make sure you enter the exact number of stars in the episode under "Settings" in the world editor, otherwise the completion percentage will be screwed up during episode selection.
> Give your episode a name under "Settings". This is the name that will show up during episode selection.
> Make sure that the default SMBX credits roll at some point in one of your levels, otherwise the player will never be able to get 100% completion.
> Your episode should now be playable.

Make sure that the path isn't connected to the "START" icon. Have the "START" point link to your first level (as opposed to being your first level), then have the path continue from that level.

To clarify, all paths connected to the "Game Start" level icon will be revealed by default no matter what. You have to have the path link to the actual first level, as Imaynotbehere4long said.

You uncheck the the game start checkbox for that level.
