OMG really? we keep on telling you... EXEPT THE CRITISIM. Because that's the reason of putting a topic in the projects index.
you can't just make up you own rules, not in this thread.
Look, I'm really a nice guy (sometimes) but you need to tolerate people's opinion.

I would love to. Except it doesn't even qualify as criticism.
BECAUSE IT'S NONSENSE.
You commented on the viability of levels which ARE TESTS THEY ARE NOT EVEN LEVELS. You commented on the coolness of a map which is entirely a worthless placeholder item. You said something about a cutoff which...I...I don't even know what that's supposed to MEAN?!
And no one wants to hear about your pingas or why they should touch it.
I'm done with you. Go troll elsewhere. Anyone that has criticism that is quantifiable or even RELEVANT will have my attention but not you.

Holy hell you are such a noob.
That is my signature under that line.

ANYhow... on to something with substance.
The first level is as I say done except for some more graphic changes I want to make. Having built the first level, in terms of structure and playability I am going to focus for awhile on getting a working map done & changing out the graphics until I have a first level I'm prepared to demo.
I can't make up my mind about the style and look of the map...keep thinking I want to do an old and weathered look for the map, maybe something that looks inked like the placeholder LOTR image. But then I worry it'll be too drab for a Mario game. There's gotta be an in-between.
If you could do your own custom map, which way would you go with it? Have any of you done an image for a map? I haven't seen any in the episodes I've played but that doesn't mean it hasn't been tried.
I have written a sort of guideline/wishlist for my main goals in this project, which are plans that I hope others will share & will be excited about working on with me:
Wish List:
- Custom powerups. Have alternate suit artwork that can be substituted on a per-level basis. If it overrides a common powerup like fireballs, the special powerups should be used on chosen levels only, where they can be of use throughout and then redacted to start the next level.
- Opportunities for faster movement. NES and SNES had to constrain not only graphic detail but CPU for physics & collision. We are largely free from that limit. Using custom NPC code, explore how and when possible to have accelerated motion (fast moving airships, blasting from cannon-type objects, objects to enhance jumps further).
- Complete overhaul of most main baddies, including goombas, koopas, shyguys, etc. Altering code for items thrown at you such as hammers or fireballs allows you to freely design what things are coming at the player and how they behave. Adjusting the number of frames of movement for key NPCs (if not all) to make a smoother experience. We are not limited to 2-3 frames any longer.
- All custom backgrounds. I'd be happy if we never have to use an existing Mario BG ever. Oh, they're great, but we have the potential to do so much more!
- Further customize secondary playable characters. With certain limitations like Peach being unable to fly, or all 3 secondary characters not having "slide" ability, look for other opportunities to give them advantages. Use solely Toad, Peach or X for entire levels at a time? Design custom powerups for those levels that make them more fun to use?
- Depth! We're designed unlicensed, free to play games. Poach the internet! Bring home some beautiful music and custom graphics, if you don't sell it then you have creative license.
- Make your own! Your own creations will be able to best fit the mood and experience you want to convey, so yeah poach from the good ol' web but only when you can't make something even better on your own!

I'm aware this is your way of handling things, but you should try to hold yourself back a bit. You're going a little too far.
And aptuttle, even if the way Superiorstar is expressing it could have been a bit better, his intentions were mainly positive. We aren't talking bad about your work, we are helping you to improve it. It's difficult to get used to it, but the way to become a good designer, making a good episode is the difficult one of trying, then wait for criticism, improve accordingly, try again and so on. We all became decent that way, and even if it differs slightly for anyone, this is the way we kept on going to become who we are. Now we are trying to get others on this way.

I couldn't agree with you more, Kyo, about listening to criticism.
However, I do not believe his intentions were positive. I believe he was just there to troll. Why do I think so? Commenting on things I clearly stated are not part of the game whatsoever--like a placeholder LOTR map or an image from a "weird level" that's actually not even a LEVEL but only existed as a place to test sprite changes--is indisputable proof that he did not take the time to read the numerous comments I made stating what such screenshots were depicting. That is a troll. The fact that he's done this to numerous other people before me is just overkill.
Carry on with the criticisms...that's not what I have a problem with. I'm designing this game because I hope tons of people will play it...if I worked on this with a great commitment of my time for two YEARS and no one enjoyed it, I would be devastated. People's response to the game is more important than anything.
Said commentor has been blocked from my view. Let it could be said that someone could launch a 5-page tirade identifying every flaw in my game they can point out and they won't go on my ignore list, but someone who's just out to troll me by criticizing items that aren't even PART of my flippin' GAME will go on ignore real quickly.

However, I do not believe his intentions were positive. My belief is reinforced by the discovery that he does this to others all the time and is becoming known for trolling threads and annoying people. You won't ever hear me become defensive or rant against anyone who offers constructive criticism that is objective and based upon reality. Now the first page of this thread, which really is supposed to be here to invite people to collaborate on this thing, will forever be marred by his opinion that "this shouldn't be called Mario 5 because it's a bad game with weird levels and cutoff" when all of his supposed criticism has no relation to anything I'm even doing...I'm not angry because he criticized, I'm angry because it's nonsense & I feel like it was placed for no other reason than to troll.
Carry on with the criticisms...that's not what I have a problem with.
I never said this was a bad game, that's what your not getting.
I said you need to work on these levels and change the name, that's all.
and stop calling me a troll before it get's out of hand.

It's good to see you are ready to take criticism and all, but you shouldn't call him a troll, since he's clearly not amused by it. And no, he wasn't trolling. He was criticizing. The quality of his criticism is something completely different again. That's not what I'm talking about.

I know what you're trying to say. I just don't agree with your assessment of his intentions.
Anyways, I am officially moving on. I created this topic hours ago to invite people to be part of this idea and as of this moment, all we have are a couple dozen posts about trolling & criticisms and earlier, a bunch of stuff from folks who couldn't wait a few hours for me to get home and post some more relevant screenshots, so we all got images of "test projects" and sprite manipulations that I only had access to because I'd posted them on FB for funsies...

Alright, one important victory: I've figured out how to call a function based upon what character you currently are.
Now if only some of the memory modifiers would work (like firing rate), I'd be on to something useful eh?

Hahaha the jokes on you that's a SMB 2 ladder!! And it looks awesome!
People, PLEASE READ CAPTIONS UNDER SCREENSHOTS THEY ARE IMAGES TAKEN WHILE TESTING GAMEPLAY OPTIONS. if you're going to comment on them. You people all went nuts when I told you I wanted to wait a few hours to post some more cleaned-up screenshots. Now I post shots I did of my testing some things and you're all like "EEEEEE OMG A LADDER WIF NO PURPOSE OMG TACKY!"
Just to spite you all, I'm gonna update screenshots as I make progress but I WILL leave that bizarro worldmap up in screenshots til the day this is completed. If I hear another word from anyone about it I will block them so I don't have to see their comments.

That sort of attitude is going to cause you problems in the future, not just with your project but with your stay in this community. That's what I tried pointing out but apparently you've already labelled me a troll and moved on. Nobody likes people who dismiss others way too fast.
I just better not come back to this thread to see you are treating users with legitimate concerns like dirt because they don't word things the way you like it.

Absolutely! Welcome to the team!
I'll be getting a dropbox thing set up online soon for filesharing. It's getting late here, but I'll shoot you an email tomorrow as I do want to chat with you directly and share thoughts on our game. Until then:

Brand new just finished code for this...we now have a whole lotta properties we can customize for individual characters thanks to LunaDLL! Tomorrow I'll, ah, work on toning down the rapid-fire ability just a smidge! That and I've developed a runaway memory leak that needs fixing.

In a projects threaf you should post actual level screenshots for the most part. A project is to be jufged by the screenshota and the screenshots should show parts that are near completion. If you post unfinished test screenshots it's no surprise if you get negative criticism for that. Just post your project if you have something to show that does look what the finished episode will look like. Then people can judge these screenshots.

Oh, wait, you're that little priss who whined that I was taking too long to post my screenshots, and seems to be OH SO QUICK with a handy "kid strikes out" gif. Actually that does sound kinda trollish.
I treat just about everyone with respect...just not people who are disrespectful to me from the get-go.
Are you serious? DarkMatt didn't even say something offensive this time, and wasn't disrespectful either. You honestly have to work on that last line a bit. If you're going to treat others respectfully, then do it even if they say something you don't like. That's quite important.
And he said you apparently labelled him as troll, and it seems like he was right. And by the way, if I was you, I'd be particularly careful when talking to a moderator. It can lead you to consequences if you don't pay attention to that point.

Did you even read the project forum rules? Doesn't seem so.
Really dude, stop to be immature and tell all that they are trolling (do you even know what's trolling?!), but, instead, you have to learn how to take criticism.
