How to Make A Good Joke Level [Tutorial]

Postby silent_ » Sun Aug 24, 2014 7:34 pm

This is for the people who don't make good joke levels, or just don't know how to make a joke level.

STEP 1:
Don't make your joke level Kaizo-ish. Stick with normal difficulty. However, feel free to add a few unfair death traps. That's what makes a joke level a joke level.

STEP 2:
Don't add pro-tips at the beginning, even if they're false. Let the player experience the level for themselves. That reminds me: Don't focus on gameplay. Think of joke levels as the opposite of normal levels. Aim at the worst gameplay imaginable, but still make it playable and don't give people seizures.

STEP 3:
It is not necessary to make a joke level look bad and clash from the very start to the very end. A great thing to do is start out the player in a peaceful grassland or just a normal level, and once they go down a pipe/in a door, there is a bunch of crappy graphics, and random talking NPCs (such as the troll face).

STEP 4:
Have jokes. There is no such thing as a joke level without jokes, and make sure the joke(s) you add are nothing already overused in this world. For instance, I think we all know the joke "Yo mama so fat, when she sat on the donkey, it died". How about say something like "Yo mama so fat, John Michell invented the black hole theory in her butthole/asshole/anus/whateveryouguyscallitthesedays". But still, I would rather you stay away from Yo Mama jokes, as they get old. Maybe a joke about the forum? And, note that the jokes you add in your joke levels can be sexual, vulgar, hard to understand, cheesy, or rude towards the player. But don't combine all of these: It will make your level a blatant mess.

STEP 5:
Make your joke level feel like a whole episode. Have some plot twist or something. Have a random Toad or friendly guy tell you, "Peach kidnapped Luigi!" and when you reach the end, that Toad/other friendly guy says, "Haha, dummy! You totally fell for it!" and then he/she gives you a star.

Now, go out and make some joke levels. Try to reach a score better than a 0, that will be a good challenge.

I'd also like to add that I feel like a joke level is 10x funnier if the user doesn't specify that it is a joke level that they're posting.

that's like nintendo making a game that's supposed to be mario and when the player gets this "mario game" it turns out that's it's a zelda game

Good, I guess, but honestly, joke levels are kind of a broad term. This describes ONE type of joke level.

I see that you're trying to use the same logic, but that's a bit far-fetched and two different levels of wavelength.
I'm sure the community knows what to expect going in to a level/playing a level. Usually people don't tell you that
they're posting a joke level anyways. It's unsurprising when someone tags a topic with "[joke level]"

Also, on the same logical note, that's like going to a movies to see a funny comedy, but they don't tell you it's gonna have a sad story.
It's done all the time. Don't be a schmuck lol

Step 6: ADD FROZEN REFERENCES

A joke level these days can't stand that well if there aren't many good Frozen references. And your guide: it really explains how to make a joke level that is like Vinyl's level in ToB7, the Mitt Romney one, rather than any old one. What about joke levels like Block Bollocks, Frozen Hills and the Chip Skylark level from ToB6? They were joke levels, but they didn't follow the guidelines above.

Explicit hate? You stop. Take it to PMs/staff if you don't have anything good to say, or just don't say anything at all.

Castlewars has had a past of having a blatant obsession with bringing up Frozen all of the time. I can't do anything but agree with Christian07.

Not all joke levels have to have the same guidelines. The ones you listed were unique. My suggestions were just how to make a traditional and average joke level.
