Hardcoded text

Postby Enchlore » Thu Aug 21, 2014 8:56 pm

What I'm looking for here is a program I could use to change the hardcoded text in SMBX (like "Start Game," "Mario Game," "Luigi Game," "2 Player" and "Battle Mode"). I know I've seen someone mention it before, and it was used for the Talkhaus episode, but I can't remember the program name. Can anyone help?

No, I'm not looking for changing the hardcoded GFX. I mean the menu text.

That is part of the hard-coded GFX. You can basically re-skin the whole engine using this including the text.

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to change the text by extracting the files and replacing them. Only the font is there, because it's arranged by the engine to create the menu text. That's how the episode names are always listed with the same font and also prevents inexperienced users from posting episodes with dopey-looking menu titles when they don't have access to a fitting font.

Bump.

Valtteri suggested I use HexEdit to try to edit the menu text, but when I open SMBX with it, I can only change the level editor text. Does anyone know what I do now?

Maybe search for the value of whatever "Mario Game" is? I dunno, I have very limited experience with hex editors (I only used it to allow me to type illegal characters in a steam game).

I can't find it. I tried with the Talkhaus A2MBXT executable too, since it has different names, but I couldn't find anything of interest.

One time was posted a tutorial for hacking SMBX. I still have it, so here is it. There are also download for some things you need. I'm pretty sure you'll find what you need there.

That file only has tutorials for changing hardcoded graphics, splash screens and the world map music.

Go to talkhaus and ask in the A2MBXT forum help thread

I think the menu text and all the other things are actually hard coded.
