Umbrella Beach

Postby BowtiedFlare » Sun Aug 17, 2014 5:40 am

This is a level with a beach gimmick and a few umbrellas. I would say the difficulty is a little hard. The level is an average length, and it may be in one of my future episodes I am working on.

I hate to be rude, but your opinion or "review" on this level makes no sense.
You haven't played it yet and you're judging it because it has "1 pixel" of custom graphics. That seems very illogical, don't you think?

Most of the users here just judge by screenshots and complain for every 1x1 pixels since SMBX uses 2x2.

Sure, but that's all he talked about lol.

It's looking like 1x1 -> level is bad.

Looks pretty sweet though, I'll take a look.

A guy who isn't afraid to speak his own thoughts, opinions, and concerns, most certainly deserves a review.

Generally...
A short, but nice, beach level with a very aquatic atmosphere. I like the music selection for the underwater section, and it did nothing but encourage me to keep going and actually distracted me from how much I hated underwater places. Regardless, to start with the flaws. Firstly, the umbrella clashed heavily with the atmosphere. Why? 1x1 pixels. And why do things with 1x1 pixels clash with the atmosphere? Because SMBX is made of 2x2 pixels, which are a lot more simplistic compared to 1x1 pixels. However, if you removed the umbrellas, the whole name would have no purpose, and I doubt you know how to remove 1x1 pixels, so I recommend you make a thread in the Help and Support board. Some genius should tell you how to remove them, or maybe they'll remove them for you. Anyway, the other main flaw in the blandness. Sure, it's a beach. I don't think you'd see a bunch of grassy hills growing on the beach. But still. You should try to find some good scenery and add it to the level to add more prettiness and variety. Also, I disliked how you mixed SMB3 with SMW in this level. Of course, it's subjective that SMB3 and SMW don't look good together, but it's objective that SMB3 is too detailed to go with SMW, which is cartoony. To fix this, you could either download this pack: http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... 9716#p9716, or you could altogether remove the lava in the underwater section and replace the SMW Koopas with SMB3. However, the springboard is fine and it's rather unnoticeable anyway. Oh, and the one block under the Bullet Bill at the beginning creates a cut-off. While you're probably unsure on how to fix this, you could go to the Backgrounds section, go to the SMB3 tab, and look for the black(ish) BGO on the bottom right of the "Block Tiles" tab. Put this under the Bullet Bill. Otherwise, I really think you could have added some seaweed or something in the water in the first section. It looks a bit bland in my honest opinion. That about covers the flaws from section one. Section two was a downfall in the level. Despite the music, it was downright bad. It just felt so empty at times, like something was missing. What was missing? I'm not entirely sure. It was something in the atmosphere, though, that's a fact. Either way, it could have used more scenery and perhaps some more ceiling. I wasn't fond of the cut-off, either, and while the cut-off with the tileset is unfixable, the cut-off with the gray pipe that generates Bloopers is fixable, and to fix it? Have a BGO that's a pipe piece. (If you don't understand this, sorry. I can't explain things that well.) Anyways, that lava. You. Don't. Put. Lava. Under. Water. And since there actually IS that lava underwater, realistically, the whole water would already have been overheated, all of the enemies would have been dead, and right when Mario would have went in there he would have been dead. Conclusively, though, the part right before the two Cheep-Cheep generators when you're going up and avoiding Piranha Plants, it's unfairly difficult. I don't see how, unless you're a ninja and not a fat plumber, you can avoid the Piranhas.

And sorry for grammatical errors. I wrote that pretty quickly and read over it in a rush.

Pros...

Pros That WON'T Affect Your Score...
-badass underwater music, I LOVED it (but I won't add points for this since this is an opinion, sorry)

Pros That WILL Affect Your Score...
-great atmosphere
-great coin and power-up placement

Pros That WILL HEAVILY Affect Your Score...
-AWESOME enemy variety, best I've seen in a while
-great challenge
-rewarding secrets

Cons...

Cons That WON'T Affect Your Score...
-SMW and SMB3 don't look good together, but since this is an opinion, it won't affect your score but still, PLEASE fix it
-cut-off with the purple tileset underwater; you probably don't know what I mean so this won't affect your score
-BLOOPER GENERATOR FFFUUUUUU...ck
-no "main" gimmick

Cons That WILL Affect Your Score...
-lava underwater, uh, what
-could use more ceiling and more BGOs in the underwater AND beach section
-I'm a fat plumber, not a ninja. In other words, the Piranhas at a certain part on the underwater section are nearly impossible to avoid; read the "Generally..." section for elaboration on this
-could use some more question blocks and bricks in the underwater section

Cons That WILL HEAVILY Affect Your Score...
-immense amount of cut-off (meh, not really immense but still)
-1x1 pixels on the umbrella

Overall...
3.5

Okay level, but could use some improvement here and there.

Thanks A Lot Guys!
Kep, thanks for the review, AND the play through from bossedit8, nice! Kep, your review made me realize some flaws for future levels, as well as that play through from bossedit8. I'd like to thank you both for helping me change and fix my level editing skills. Thank you for your time, and the 3.5, even though it's not that good. This positive feedback will help me for future levels. Thanks again.

The Umbrella Issue
The thing with the umbrella is, I used it once to substitute as a graphic for the smw cobweb. I realized it was too small, and resized it to the size of a regular hill. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal, but now I realize my mistake.

You can also check out my episode that no one's reviewed yet at: http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... =36&t=4744

Also, thanks for being enthusiastic about the music selection. I do have a good taste in music. Even from the classics.

Version 1.1 is now available, fixing some problems/flaws with the level mentioned in Kep's review. The issue with the 1x1 pixel umbrella is barely fixed, because where I am right now, I can not pixel edit. -.-
