Super Mario timeline (ATTENTION MARIO EXPERTS!)

Postby HeroLinik » Thu Aug 07, 2014 5:06 am

Unbeknown to a lot of you guys, I've been studying the Mario games closely for quite a while now. After many years of studying the plots and finding it out in relation to the chronology of the games, I think I've come up with a plausible timeline for the Mario universe. I'm by no means perfect, and there probably might be some mistakes on there; if you see any discrepancies, anachronisms, missing games, or reasons why one game can't be where it is in the timeline, please let me know. Do note that there may some rather obscure games on here as well. If you've never heard of a certain Mario game until now, lemme know. Please note that this will include spoilers for certain games if you have not played them yet! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

So without further ado, here is the timeline for the Mario series that I've come up with:
Spoiler: show
So the Mario Bros. are born. The parents hire a stork to "properly" deliver the children. However, the stork is ambushed along the way.

Yoshi Touch & Go
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

However, the couple to whom the stork gave Baby Mario and Baby Luigi claim that the bros are not their babies. It goes on searching for the real parents, when it finds Kamek, who wants to steal the babies again. Yoshi thwarts Baby Bowser once more, but then the Bowser from the future shows up.

Yoshi's New Island

Baby Bowser was still too young and took too much of a beating to remember much. However, after the Koopa Troop's first exposure to the Mario Bros., Bowser from the future attacked again. The Mario parents were overjoyed at the return of their lost children, but what they weren't expecting was another kidnapping. The stork, remembering the children, helped out. They met Wario, but they were too young to remember.

Yoshi's Island DS

Bowser was just about to retaliate when the Shroobs attacked Yoshi's Island. The Mario Bros. from the future arrived, but the children were still too young to remember any of it. The one thing Baby Bowser remembered was his future self telling him to always be bad.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Finally, having endured too much worry and panic, the Mario parents decided Yoshi's Island was too dangerous and they sent them to a safer place: Earth (or more specifically, Brooklyn). Baby Bowser was outraged, but realised he still had one other enemy to attack.

Yoshi's Story

Over in Brooklyn and during the events of the previous game, the Mario Bros. had graduated high school, and were now finally grown up and looking for jobs. To begin with, both Mario and Luigi went into the demolition business. Little did Mario know what would eventually lie in future.

Wrecking Crew

Having to contend with a strict boss, Mario quit his job at the Wrecking Crew - even though Luigi stayed on. What followed was a tumultuous period where Mario had not found his calling and jumped from job to job, in a desperate attempt to secure employment. Having had experience working with bombs, he decided to be a soldier.

Mario's Bombs Away

However, Mario eventually quit due to finding the profession too stressful. He instead decided to go for a cement factory.

Mario's Cement Factory

Yoshi's Island was enjoying a period of peace, so the Yoshis take advantage of it and go on a vacation to Craft Island. Once more Kamek just had to disturb this peace yet again.

While the events of the previous game were taking place, Mario was fired from the cement factory. Now, he decided to be a doctor.

Baby Bowser still wasn't finished though. He wanted revenge, served cold. He used the Sundream Stone to enact his plans.

Yoshi's Crafted World

It wasn't all good news for Mario either. The medical society had dismissed him as a quack and fired him. Having been fired in various professions, Mario was starting to get desperate. He took a break from job searching, and tried his hand at carpentry. Things went rather smoothly, and he even managed to get a girlfriend. During this time period, Mario acquired some temporary experience as a boxing referee and a tennis line judge.

Punch-Out!!
Tennis
These games aren't technically Mario games. The reason they are included is because they feature Mario in some form or another.

Sometime later down the line, Mario came across a poster asking for someone to become the new "Ape Teaser" at the local circus. Mario thought this would be fun, so he tried it out.

Donkey Kong Circus

Mario's suspicions were right - it was fun. However, he'd had enough ape teasing for one day. He decided to relax and go golfing.

It was during this game of golf that Donkey Kong had escaped from the circus. He had had enough of the circus act. In a mad rage against Mario he grabbed the closest thing to him as a hostage: Mario's girlfriend Pauline.

Donkey Kong

Mario thought it was over, but Donkey Kong unexpectedly recovered and snatched Pauline again. Mario gave chase through several different locations.

The photo at the end of the game was taken much later.

Mario, in revenge, locked him in a cage. However, his son saw this and leapt to his rescue.

During the final battle, Donkey Kong Jr. had trouble lining up the keys. DK somehow decided that this was because of a lack of maths education. When they escaped to a nearby forest, DK decided to educate his son.

At some unknown time during Mario's escapade, Luigi was fired from the Wrecking Crew. He then went and followed Mario's lead at being a doctor.

Dr. Luigi

During the events of these games, the Yoshis had reared up a greenhouse on the island. However, they were besieged by some remnants of Bowser's minions, as if foreshadowing the events to come.

Greenhouse

They kept coming and went after the Yoshi eggs. Orange Yoshi had to jump in on the action again.

Vermin

Unfortunately, just like his big brother, Luigi had been dismissed as a quack and fired by the medical society. When Mario found out, he was immediately reminded of the fact that he was still jobless. With their chances running low, they joined a cake factory.

Mario Bros. II

Meanwhile, Bowser was starting to grow up and was holding in revenge at the Yoshis. It finally erupted one day, and he attacked the island again. However, someone was out there to hinder his plans...

While the events on Yoshi's Island were taking place, the Mario Bros. were fired from the cake factory after finding out how bad the cakes tasted. Looking for one last chance of finding a job, they instead go for a bottling company.

Mario Bros. (Game & Watch)

Mario and Luigi had managed to earn a lot of money, but quit the job because it was getting boring. Eventually, Mario managed to find his true calling: plumbing! After a small staycation, him and Luigi opened up their own plumbing business in Brooklyn, Mario Brothers Plumbing. While working on some sewer pipes they stumbled upon a strange green pipe that led into darkness. It wasn't on the city maps so they entered it and ended up in an uncharted area of the New York sewers, and they were riddled with enemies.

Mario Bros.

Eventually Mario found an odd ball and used it in defence.

Punch Ball Mario Bros.

The sewers led to some large towers. It was there that the battles got more hectic.

Mario Clash

Soon after, the plumbers emerged in the Mushroom Kingdom as their battles with the enemies ceased, and found a war-torn kingdom in front of them. Bowser had fully grown up and was ready for a large-scale attack on the Mushroom Kingdom, having attacked Yoshi's Island prior. For his first attack, he turned several Toads into inanimate objects such as blocks and plants, and turned to Peach, seeing her as a beautiful person yet helpless target. Mario, remembering his DK battles, along with Luigi, remembering his confrontations in the sewers, set off to defeat Bowser in style and with confidence.

Bowser was furious at seeing defeat in the hands of the Mario Bros., having not used Yoshi to help. Of course, he decided to do better.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Meanwhile, Donkey Kong was looking to hold revenge at Mario, and not knowing he's now in the Mushroom Kingdom, goes searching for him. He found a person called Stanley, and, mistaking him for Mario, attacks him.

Donkey Kong 3

Stanley managed to pursue DK out of the greenhouse but wasn't finished. He took the fight to outer space.

Donkey Kong 3: The Great Counterattack

Angry at seeing defeat once more, Bowser thought that upgrading his forces would do the trick. He did that by harnessing the power of the Tail Tree. However his plan backfired.

Super Mario 3D Land

By the end of these escapades, the two brothers were already celebrities. Within months they were the talk of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toys were already being made of him. DK had managed to find his way through the pipe as well and, seeing the toys, decided stealing them would be a great way for revenge.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong

The battle continued when a new amusement park opened and Pauline came by for old times' sake. Seeing her, DK kidnapped her again:

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

The park was enjoying success to the point where Mario decides to expand it. He was met with a nasty shock.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!

Peach was pleased at the plumbers in helping her out in times of need, so she invites them to a party. Little did they know, Bowser was lying in wait.

Paper Mario

After the events of this game, Peach decided to continue the party. Mario even did a juggling act for entertainment.

Mario the Juggler

Upon realising that it was practically impossible to kidnap Pauline, DK decides he wants a Pauline toy to compensate. However, they were sold out...

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!

Meanwhile, Bowser was formulating a plan. He turns to a new strategy and decides to hold Peach as prisoner in her own castle, cutting off the Mushroom Kingdom in the process. However Peach does not see this coming...

Super Mario 64

Mario had finally reunited with Yoshi after all these years! But what about Pauline? Donkey Kong kidnaps her once again. However, it was just a lure to a party that the two had organised. Tensions between Mario and Donkey Kong had finally calmed down!

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars
The photo at the end of Donkey Kong for Game Boy most likely occurred around this point.

As a result, Donkey Kong began to appreciate Mario's relationship with Pauline, and decides to work with her rather than try to steal her off Mario.

Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move

The work was getting really tiring. DK thought Mario needed a break, so he decided to treat his new friend to some ice hockey. Meanwhile, Pauline returned back home.

Donkey Kong Hockey

Peach also wanted a break from bring kidnapped, so she went on vacation. Eventually stumbling across Rogueport, Peach bought a treasure map and gets everyone excited on the hunt. When Mario returned from his game of ice hockey, disaster struck.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

...and Bowser was still lagging behind Mario after the end, so he ordered King Boo to find a way to attack the kingdom. King Boo, seeing Mario as the only viable threat, decided to "eliminate" him. When Luigi returned, trouble ensued.

Luigi's Mansion

Bowser finally returned, tired from his "vacation" so he decided to kidnap Peach with as little effort as possible. Little did he know this would be a huge adventure for him.

Super Mario RPG

During Mario and Bowser's grand adventure through the kingdom, Toadette and another Toad, Captain Toad were meanwhile treasure hunting. They found a Power Star, only for Toadette and the Power Star to be made off with by the evil Wingo. Captain Toad goes treasure hunting to find the Power Star, defeat Wingo and save Toadette.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Unfortunately, the alliance Bowser made with Mario was forgotten. Bowser was starting to tire out, and was getting bored of attacking the Mushroom Kingdom. For a change of pace and to prepare for his next major attack, he attacked the nearby Sprixie Kingdom. Remembering his allies from his previous adventure, Mario allied with Luigi, Peach and Toad to stop Bowser's conquest of the kingdom and save the Sprixies.

Super Mario 3D World

Bowser, furious at being defeated outside of the Mushroom Kingdom, saw that Mario had tagged along Peach to help. He knew Mario was becoming a growing threat to his plans, so he kidnapped Mario and Luigi, and went on to attack Vibe Island. He didn’t have much hope in Peach being able to defeat him on her own, but was to be proven wrong.

Super Princess Peach

Meanwhile, it was now over for Donkey Kong. He was tiring out, so he decided to retire from Mario and Pauline's escapades to rear up a family of Kongs to live in harmony with him, including one named after himself. This DK has his Banana Hoard stolen by the Kremlings, and him and Diddy Kong form a tag team:

Donkey Kong Country

However, Cranky Kong wasn't convinced about their escapades. He wanted to see the young Kongs have an adventure again, and arranges K. Rool to repeat his plans almost the exact same, to the annoyance of DK.

Donkey Kong Land

Having been defeated at Vibe Island (by Peach, nonetheless) and the Sprixie Kingdom, Bowser was falling into a slump. He was running out of ideas, and tried building tall towers to block out the sun. This brought back Mario's rivalry with his older arch-nemesis, Foreman Spike.

Wrecking Crew '98

He then decided to go back in time and fix his mistakes.

Mario's Time Machine

He then sealed up his castle with a barrier that could only be broken by the Magic Typewriter:

Meanwhile, K. Rool had returned with a slightly more thought out plan. This time he decided to kidnap DK himself.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Land 2

Bowser was just about to give up until he tried to kidnap Peach one last time on his own to see if he could succeed. Someone had to ruin his schemes though...

Super Paper Mario

After this grand adventure, Bowser rested for a while. Once again, the truce was soon forgotten, but Bowser didn't act on it right away. Meanwhile, Mario heard news of a large breakthrough at an archaeological dig and decided to check it out.

Mario's Picross

Meanwhile K. Rool had returned. This time, he kidnapped Diddy Kong as well.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

After the events of the previous game, K. Rool heard of a contest taking place to find the fabled Lost World. He decided to take advantage of this.

Donkey Kong Land III

Bowser had rested up for a long time, and now he was ready to go. This time, he sent a group of elite Koopa Troop members that he had hired, the Koopalings, to attack the kingdom.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

However, the bros had snagged all the coins, and this resulted in a Great Depression. Banks and businesses failed around the kingdom, and Bowser saw this as his chance to attack the entire Mushroom World.

Super Mario Bros. 3

After defeating the Koopalings and Bowser, the Marios decide to go on vacation to Dinosaur Land. Bowser was following them though, and he kidnapped Peach, and imprisoned the Yoshis...

Super Mario World

Mario triumphed again. But knowing that Mario'd used Yoshi to help him, Bowser was angry and decided to go back in time.

Yoshi's Island DS

Although Mario had beaten Bowser yet again, he had learned much from this attack. Next he attacked Jewelry Land.

Yoshi's Safari

Meanwhile Diddy Kong had been visiting his friend Timber on an island nearby when the evil Wizpig attacked:

Diddy Kong Racing

However, when DK returned, he only found trouble on DK Island. K. Rool finally had a breakthrough. Kidnap ALL of DK's friends...but leave DK alone.

Donkey Kong 64

The Mushroom Kingdom appeared to be enjoying a long peace, but it just had to be shattered. Bowser and the Koopalings were now harnessing the power of the Paint Stars of Prisma Island to power themselves up. They just had to be foiled, though.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

It was after this that a new evil was brewing. Fawful, from the Beanbean Kingdom, was plotting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. He attacked along with Cackletta, and Bowser reluctantly joined Mario, only to eventually be possessed by Cackletta. Meanwhile, a lowly Goomba was holding the fort for the Koopa Troop, named Captain Goomba:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser

E. Gadd then said that he had built a time machine. Peach went on a vacation 'for fun', not knowing what would happen:

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

K. Rool tries a new strategy and attacks yet again, but indirectly. He sends the Snowmads to freeze the island on DK's birthday.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

To celebrate K. Rool's defeat again, DK continues his celebrations, and thus the events were full of fun on his birthday.

When DK holds the Jungle Jam Tournament, disaster strikes.

DK: King of Swing

Meanwhile, Bowser was coming up with a new plan. He built on the idea of Peach wanting to have fun and set up a fake amusement park with a fun ride called the Sky Cannon.

Mario Pinball Land

That failed to work, so Bowser revived one of his old plans: kidnapping Mario. But he took this a little further by planning to attack the real world. But he forgot about Luigi...

Mario is Missing!

Bowser was getting desperate. He couldn't believe the Koopalings were failing him. He dug through his mind, looking for one more plan. What he came up with was pure comedy genius.

Hotel Mario

Meanwhile, the Kongs were off on vacation. He caught word of trouble there: King K. Rool had attacked Sun Sun Island!

DK: Jungle Climber

K. Rool eventually backed away from Donkey Kong, having been beaten several times. Meanwhile Bowser had a son - the spittin' image of him! He was overjoyed! While he was nurturing his new son he ordered King Boo to hold the fort again. As expected, King Boo went after Luigi again, kidnapping Mario, but he took it one step further and shattered the Dark Moon.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Sometime after King Boo's defeat, bright Orbs started appearing around Peach's castle. Bowser, with Kamek's assistance, was willing to use this as an opportunity for his son's first attack on the kingdom. Harnessing the power of the Orbs, and with the assistance of his own son and the Koopalings, Bowser gave kidnapping Peach another try.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

DK caught wind of trouble on the island yet again. But this time, it was not K. Rool.

However, Fawful wasn't finished. He decided to go after Bowser directly and, along with his henchman Midbus, brainwashes the Koopa Troop. Now Bowser, along with the bros. have to save the Mushroom Kingdom. Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. wanted in on the action, as he wanted to prove that he could act as a good leader. However, the Koopalings weren't convinced...

Bowser Jr's Journey

Bowser did promise he was going to kidnap Peach after the events of BiS, and he did so. However, as he was still healing from his injuries, Bowser sent his airships and the Koopalings to kidnap Peach instead. Bowser did eventually heal up though, ready to fight Mario.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Bowser's castle had been completely destroyed after the events of the previous game, so he decided to conquer Peach's castle instead, and remake it in his own image. To do this, Bowser began a siege:

New Super Mario Bros. U
New Super Luigi U

Bowser, extremely cross at the Koopalings failing him yet again, banished the Koopalings and decided that the best plan of attack was to convince Bowser Jr. that Peach was his mother. He also waited until Mario and Peach went to Isle Delfino on vacation...

Super Mario Sunshine

Despite being defeated again, Bowser saw that his own son had grown a lot since their older outings. Seeing confidence in his own son, Bowser sent him to kidnap Peach on his own, and succeeded.

New Super Mario Bros.

Mario returned from his adventure to find that Bowser had planned something rather dastardly: setting Peach's castle on fire!

Fire

In the meantime, Donkey Kong caught wind of more trouble. A previously unknown tribe known as the Tiki Tak Tribe were making off with the Banana Hoard!

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Several Toads had to fix up Peach's castle after the damages it had sustained during the arson attack. However, Undodog still had much to learn and accidentally destroyed the whole castle, prompting Mario to jump back in on the action again and procure enough coins to rebuild the castle.

Super Mario Maker 2 (story mode)

Meanwhile, Bowser had found out that Mario had been using Yoshi more times than necessary, so he decided to repeat his older plan and go back in time, and attack Yoshi directly.

Yoshi's New Island

After that didn't work, Bowser spent some time out to formulate a plan. What he came up with was out of this world.

Super Mario Galaxy

Even though the universe was now reborn, Bowser's ideas were not. He takes Peach into space again.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Peach was so happy with Mario's rescues that she built him a castle in his name. Little does he know was that there was trouble brewing in Sarasaland, and Peach's sister had been kidnapped by Tatanga. Mario went off to save her.

Super Mario Land

However, when he returned to his castle, he found it had been taken over by Wario. It had all been a set-up!

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Wario decided to retaliate by getting the Mario Bros., Peach and Yoshi lost and hinders their vision.

Mario & Wario

He then realised that he was biting off more than he could chew by fighting Mario, so he went off to get another castle.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Captain Syrup wasn't finished though.

She struck again.

Wario Land: Shake It!

Captain Syrup then backed off from Wario, but Wario was still greedy for treasure, so he explored all over the place.

Wario was pleased with himself. He had amassed a lot of wealth, including a statue in his likeness. However, he was attacked by some unfamiliar enemies. Bowser's troops had somehow found out about Wario and they also wanted to cash in.

Fire Attack

After his battles with the enemies ceased, Wario was eyeing his wealth, and used it to build himself a castle out of the very riches he had gotten. However, thanks to the Black Jewel, the castle started collapsing...

Wario World

Meanwhile Mario and co. had gone on a vacation to Pi'illo Island. This wouldn't be without Bowser though, who had now teamed up with the evil bat king Antasma to wreak havoc on the island.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

During the plumbers's escapades on the island, Wario watched some TV and ended up on another wild adventure.

Wario: Master of Disguise

Tired from his adventure, Wario rested. After sitting and thinking, he remembered his old friends in the Mushroom Kingdom. He decided to visit them and 'have some fun'. However, no-one took him seriously, as because the plumbers were still vacationing on Pi'illo Island, a Toad was dispatched to take care of him.

Wario's Woods

After being defeated by a lowly Toad, Wario gave in, and decided to work for this guy called Bomberman.

Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!

Days passed after the Pi'illo Island vacation until Wario found Mario at another archaeological dig. He apologized for his other shenanigans and Mario accepted. They worked together on the dig.

They also worked together on a building project.

Helmet

When a virus epidemic raged the kingdom, Mario leapt at the chance to prove his pills actually worked and he wasn't a quack. Wario wanted in on the action too, as a lot of the carriers were enemies from his past adventures. There were still tensions between the two. Even Bowser's troops were affected.

As Bowser had gotten rather overworked healing his troops, he went on vacation to Lake Lapcat. This forced Bowser Jr. to hold the fort in his absence, and it was at this point when the Rabbids were mysteriously teleported into the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser Jr. took full advantage of this, and in result, a new evil was brewing. Mario now had to work with the Rabbids to destroy this evil.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Bowser Jr. meanwhile wanted to visit his father at Lake Lapcat, and have some fun. However, this backfired, forcing Bowser Jr. to make an unlikely alliance with Mario to stop Bowser's rampage.

Bowser's Fury

Sometime after their return from Lake Lapcat, Mario and the Rabbids were lounging around in the grounds of Peach's castle before the evil Cursa attacked. This forced Mario to ally with the Rabbids yet again to stop this.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Things began to wind down in the Mushroom Kingdom. Yoshi asked for Mario's help in finally ridding his island of enemies:

Yoshi

...and his cookie factory.

Yoshi's Cookie
Egg

During the events of the three previous games, Bowser decided to bring the Koopalings back to his army on one condition: destroy Mario once and for all. Meanwhile Luigi was searching for a draft in the attic of Peach's castle, and accidentally released the Paper Mario world onto the kingdom. This forced Mario to jump back into the action once again, where he made an alliance with Paper Mario to take down Bowser and Paper Bowser.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

After his defeat alongside Paper Bowser, Bowser was so pissed off at the Koopalings that he banished them for good. Bowser's ideas were running low again, but he had one more in his mind. He hired Waluigi to help him steal the Music Keys from Truffle Towers to create more chaos. There were tensions between Mario and Wario again.

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

All the dancing made Mario become very tired, so he decided to get some well-earned rest...but he never woke up. He had been taken to the land of Subcon, and he had to save its citizens from the diabolical Wart (although the whole thing was just Mario's dream). Meanwhile, Bowser was thinking up some more ideas.

Super Mario Bros. 2

With Mario not around, Bowser, having banished the Koopalings, was training up some new minions in their place, the Broodals. As a distraction, and to buy him time to plan his next idea, he ordered King Boo to attack once more. King Boo went back to form by tricking Luigi into winning a contest. However, his attempts were foiled yet again.

Luigi's Mansion 3

King Boo had been eradicated yet again, and the Boos were more amicable now they had been removed from King Boo's influence. Bowser was, understandably, not happy. When Mario returned to Peach's castle, he spotted Bowser attempting a siege. Mario jumped in on the action, but in a twist of fate, is defeated by Bowser as he prepares to forcefully marry Peach. Mario, with his new minion, Cappy, now had to stop this, but it came at a price.

Super Mario Odyssey

After all this is done, Bowser banishes the Broodals, considering them failures. On his own, Bowser was getting very desperate with failure after failure. By this point he knew he was fighting a losing battle, so as a last-ditch attempt at snagging Peach, he recycled an earlier plan. When Peach returned from his vacation with Tiara, Bowser imprisoned her in the castle walls and kidnapped not just Mario, but Luigi and Wario. At the same time he turned to King Boo again, while also allying with Goomboss and Chief Chilly, and had them imprison the plumbers. However, he didn't know that Yoshi was still around to save them...

Super Mario 64 DS

Despite his continuing failures, Bowser still refused to give up. He built on the idea of stealing the Power Stars and chose to steal the Mini Stars instead, and use them to wreak havoc across the kingdom. However, the plan ended in failure.

Mario Party 9

Bowser had been defeated for the umpteenth time. At this point he was starting to lose hope. However, with the Origami Festival on the horizon, Bowser saw this as an opportunity for another attack on the kingdom. These hopes were dashed as a new evil was plotting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, casting Bowser aside.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

As the Origami Festival continued, Mario and Bowser accepted a truce, which was, unfortunately, later forgotten. Peach saw this as an opportunity and began bringing back peacetime events of the kingdom, starting with tennis.

Mario's Tennis

When Peach brought back baseball, Bowser saw this chance to defeat Mario and capture Peach again, so he challenged Mario and co. to baseball.

Mario Super Sluggers

By this point it was almost time for the annual Sticker Fest. Until this point it was unable to be held due to Bowser being a danger, but due to the truce previously, Mario believed he had been defeated good and proper. He was to be met with a nasty shock. This was the last time Bowser teamed up with Bowser Jr. to execute his plans.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Bowser was gobsmacked. He couldn't believe that even Bowser Jr. was failing him, so he decided to train up some new minions instead, the Koopa Kids. Mario and co. were meanwhile having fun as they had decided to throw a party around many different locales. They went to far off places and had a blast, but Bowser and the Koopa Kids were following them and causing problems, leading to a final battle on Eternal Star.

Mario Party

Bowser then noticed the Millenium Star and decided he had to get his hands on it. While the others were running around trying to decide who was best, Bowser slowly wore them down.

Mario Party 3

With the main cast having been worn down by Bowser, he took full advantage of this, stole E. Gadd's Gaddgets, and attacked Party World. This caused many small problems to erupt around the kingdom that required Mario's help to rectify.

Mario Party Advance

Feeling his strength return after these minor endeavours, Bowser decided it was time for one last attack on the kingdom. Before this, however, he attempted to secure the Dream Depot.

Mario Party 5

Finally, during the Star Carnival, Bowser managed to steal the Star Rod yet again and set his plan into motion. However, it didn't go very far.

Mario Party 8

Such a quick and humiliating defeat for Bowser was the last straw. This was the end. He had officially given up being evil. When he returned home crying, one of his minions suggested he find a way to calm himself down. He learned of Triangle Twisters and decided to get his hands on it, but first he had to get the Mario Bros. out of the way.

Mario Party DS

Finally, after having such a good time playing Triangle Twisters together, Bowser calmed down. He accepted them as friends and the two kingdoms merged. There were still rivalries between Mario and Bowser, but not on the grand scale as before, and thus the following years were full of nothing but fun.

Seems as plausible as anything else. I can see you put a lot of work into this — good job!

However, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are strongly implied to take place in alternate timelines (the events of the first game are erased in its ending). I would put them at the same place in the timeline.

Does this mean there have been exactly 157 Mario games?

Only if you don't count the remakes, cancelled games, Super Smash Bros. series, and Japan-only games. I also realised just now I missed some games off the list, so I'll add them on now.

Blue Greed beat me to it.

There are a few things that are a little weird with that timeline. I can't remember what exactly since I haven't looked at it in a while.

castlewars: Are you implying that Donkey Kong now lives in the Mushroom world (i.e. came here from Earth), and if so, how did that happen?

Forgot that. He probably found a pipe that lead to the Mushroom Kingdom sewers and it all went from there, just like with Mario and Luigi.

No - I got the info from the Super Mario Wiki. The rest (as in what happened between the games) is just speculation and is not the official truth.

So then the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Kingdom lived in peace and they never saw the Mario Bros again?

Also, this states that Sonic's home world is in the Mushroom Kingdom. But I think it is a separate planet altogether. Maybe he used a rocket ship to get there?

They merged. After Bowser and Mario settled and had fun with Triangle Twisters, Bowser and the Koopa Kids accepted Mario and co. as friends.

I'm not a Sonic player so I don't really know how he got to the real world, but assumedly he arrived after hearing about the Olympics and decided for himself that he'd be a good sport. Mario just happened to be there as well.

In the show sonic and friends are warped to earth due to the power of the chaos emeralds, including eggman.

Just letting you guys know, the notion of a consistent continuity in the Mario series is trivial at best because we have games in the series that do contradict and not reference other entries in the series IIRC, not to mention of a Game Informer interview with Miyamoto that he likened the main cast of characters to be a trope of actors like in Popeye.

Despite what notions I have, http://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/com ... o_that_of/ this fan theory quite interests me because purely he isn't trying to centralize every main series game into one timeline.

Wouldn't Partners in Time occur later since the babies teaming up with Mario and Luigi is technically modifying the past and forming a parallel universe?

Recently, it was cleared up that the Koopalings weren't Bowser's kids. For years I thought they were so that kinda rattles my head a bit.

I just edited the timeline to accommodate this fact. I didn't realise that I'd forgotten to put that in. What I've put down is that he hired them from somewhere else, but he never lived with them. That makes sense to him banishing them after the events of Hotel Mario.

However, I just realised that Bowser Jr. was in NSMBU and NSLU, so I realised that I have to move some of the events around, but I don't know where to put them considering that according to the timeline Bowser had a son and was nurturing him during the events of Dark Moon. What do you suggest about the placement of NSMBU and NSLU, guys?

I feel like NSMBU/NSLU should go after NSMBW.
