[Updated] Super Mario land (1&2) - Mix level

Postby antoinefunbros » Sun Aug 03, 2014 4:10 pm

I did this level very quikly. It was for my episode but i liked it and i decided to share it.

- Graphics come from the NEW SMBX CGFX and some textures from the SMLR episode, test this episode, it is handsome.
- I got the idea when i saw Valtteri's "Mario Zone"
- It is a mix between Super mario land 1 and 2.
- This level is composed of 5 short sections, 1 is hidden, find it !

Please give me your opinion and i will update / fix the level :)

[EDIT1] FIX#1 : Lowing the boss difficulty, making the level more faithful, updating the download link.

9/10 because
gameplay 10/10 The level was fun and challenging. The boss was not easy to beat. I'm not good at playing smbx levels so it was hard. (obviously it wouldn't be for most people) I like the mass coin area.
cgfx 9/10 I liked those rock guys, the fly guys creeped me out a bit. Bullet shooter was kinda small for the bullet.
tiling 9/10 It was kinda weird how you had all of those yellow spinny blocks also you could've used something else besides the brown special block. Good trees though.
Background 10/10 The background matched because there were lots of high trees. The bg was a sky and the bg makes sense.
Music 10/10 I liked it, and it sounds like sky music. Keep it up.
Scenery 9/10 There were a few tiles in front of some trees. The level was definetly not bare and it had some scenery.

overall It's a good level.
Improvements needed: You should change all those blocks to something else. Variety
My first judging...

Unnecessary since you don't give any details. Where is the constructive criticism?

Level review: mario land by antoinefunbros, reviewed by Christian07

Gameplay: 7/10

The level started out easy and became always more difficult. There were some spots with many enemies and other spots where only Small Mario can enter. The number of enemies in this level is good, though. About the coins, I felt there were too many coins and also there were a few in some spots. The boss was way too difficult and I died 3 times before kill him. I guess you need to low the difficult.

Atmosphere: 9/10

There was a really good Super Mario Land atmosphere and I liked the use of the music. I think the boss' music didn't really fit, tough. For all the level there was the SMB3 cave 2 BG, which is good, but sometimes you can see the cave at the bottom. I liked the many the kind of enemies and I felt there was a good amount of BGOs.

Overall: 8/10. Pretty good level. I guess the only thing you have to do is low the difficulty and the coins.

I'm sorry, two judges voted against your review. This review was not accepted.

Try to be a little more constructive, what exactly made the level fun and challenging?

Also try to give a little more reasonable scores.

I'm gonna review this FOR THE FUN OF IT!!!
Spoiler: show
This was a pretty good level. The graphics were nice, though a few were a bit weird. Overall, it's really good.
Design - 3/5
Eh, it's a remake of a preexisting level - one I haven't played. Not much I can really say.
Placement - 3/5
Again, remake. Everything is perfect Nintendo-quality, because it is by Nintendo. Not much to say really, except that original levels will get you a higher score.
Atmosphere - 5/5
It's good, it feels like all the other Super Mario Land levels I've played (since I haven't actually played any official ones).
Asthetics - 4.5/5
GREAT graphics. I mean, they're just awesome. However, the cannon pig bullets have a messed up effect, and the bomb shells have no death effect at all.
Yeah, I don't have much to say really, seeing as it's a remake of a preexisting level. But it's still really good, and would be in pretty good with 7.75/10 (or 15.5/20).

Oh thanks, but the level is not a remake (the section 1 and the section 2 look like because i use some platforms from the original mario land).

oh, I thought it was. My bad. (though when you said you made it more faithful it REALLY sounded like it was a remake)

Super Mario Land 1 & 2 Mix by antoinefunbros - Review

Looks and Atmosphere

Meh... it looked pretty bland. Section 1 only had a flat plain as a ground with some obstacles made of hit blocks and pipes, Section 2 had these SML1 platforms and Sections 3, 4 and 5 were made fully out of hit blocks. While I can see that you wanted to stay true to the original, this could've been done way better and looks really bland imo. I also feel like the SML1 and SML2 GFX didn't fit together too well - they didn't clash by any means, but still.
Also, the Pig's Cannonball effect is broken. And the effect of the Bomb Koopa that had some name I forgot is still the default SMB3 Bob-Omb one. Aside from that, there isn't really much to talk about in the GFX department.
The music in the first foour sections was a Remastering of the SML2 Athletic theme, which did fit pretty well. The Tatanga Boss had its original music though, which was kind of a huge departure from the normal music. Also, you could see the ?-Ball exit during the boss fight and the bell just disappeared after getting touched. There's a background CGFX for a ringing bell, make it so after hitting the bell this is shown by using events. And the exit theme played twice, once becaus eof the event and th eother time becaus eof the ?-Ball. The Super Ball thing looked pretty nice though and was something else then the regular stuff.
So, Looks and Amtosphere gets a

3.75/10

Gameplay and Design (counts double)

That was okay, nothing groundbreaking by any means, but not too terrible either. It was kinda weird how some enemies like the cannon pigs started mid-air when there was no reason to, and I also can't explain why you can stand on the bullet bills.
The Tatanga boss fight was pretty easy, and the bonus room had a pretty large amount of coins. Coin placement in General was pretty mediocre, and it also bugged me that you used green coins in some places. There also were way too many powerups.
The Super Balls worked as well as they could and it was pretty fun to use actually. It kinda bugged me how in the pipe in the upper screen
you showed there was nothing, so you had no reason to go there excpet 4 coins.
So, Ganeplay and Design gets a

4.5/10

Verdict

The idea of combining these two often-forgotten classics was pretty nice, I just feel like there's pretty big room for improvement, and I'd love to see this idea getting more fleshed out.
That's why my fina verdict for this is

4.25/10
