So for a while now I've been looking for some motivation/inspiration to make a level or two. Thing is, I have none what so ever, I just can't seem to be inspired enough to come up with something... So I must be thinking of it wrong or something, what do you guys do to get inspired/motivated to do a level?

Well personally I get inspiration in drawing when I look at other artist their art, when I get motivated the most is when I watch livestream of others drawing, makes me wanna try their technique and see if it makes me better. Maybe you could try playing other episodes or let's plays.

Moved to general SMBX.
As for your question, I'm afraid I can't help you as I'm simply naturally entertained by creating levels and hence I never get tired of it and I don't really need any extra motivation. Most people get ideas from the newest Mario games and I know some who feel the need to implement every new gimmick they find in fresh Mario titles in SMBX. As for myself, though, I like to examine SMB1, 2, 3 and World and look for gimmicks that never got much attention and make levels out of them.

In the past I made levels inspired by Klonoa games, originating some new gimmicks with unfortunately will never see the light of day (the levels are now long lost).

Actually, I can't get inspiration nowadays. But for get inspiration, I'm listening game musics. When I get inspired from music, I make a level with using this music. Usually the fast musics raises my inspiration (for example Sonic musics).

Inspiration is from my imagination. The gimmicks I make are event-intensive, enjoyable, and more. One big example is my Magnetic Mayhem level, which used magnets by Emral that I quickly made into working gimmicks because of my imagination.

I get inspired when I allow myself to suck, kind of.
Like, when I do something, I know I'll do it badly, but I try anyway, and I get ideas on how to make it better while doing it.

Inspiration? That's objective. I could get inspiration from a lot of things. I guess what really motivated me to use the Level Editor tool was stumbling upon a few of my top favorite YouTubers who began recording SMBX temporarily (for instance, WiiRikeToPray). Afterwards, I began searching more SMBX custom levels, and then I got addicted to the whole process. I firstly found Jake Brito, who continuously impressed me and still impresses me, and then I found Chad's channel, Valtteri's, bossedit8's, Wraith Adamn Knight's (I think that's how you pronounce and spell it), and such. Some alternatives like MarioWorker and yoshiboo62 are decent.
The first level I ever made was Rainbow Road, which I plan to totally remake soon. I found the idea from some YouTuber, I can't remember his EXACT name, however.
I assume you get the idea.

Redigit posted a video called SMBX Inspiration right around the time moving layers were released, and it had a bunch of amazing effects and graphics. You can probably still find it somewhere on YouTube, it was really good.

I'm pretty much what FutureNyanCat2014 said. You should see the video of my NSMBX Boss Battle Contest entry, I worked more on it than I ever worked on a boss ever before. I get inspiration from new ideas, sometimes I get it randomly, and sometimes I don't get any. But what I did was I joined The Invasion 3 because you don't need inspiration to work on a level. They even give you the themes and everything for whatever level you are doing. So it feels more like a job to get completed with as much effort as possible than searching for the will to create levels. Now I am working on my second TI3 level which I will probably finish up today and will submit for the community project. I suggest you join TI3 if you would rather be given inspiration than try finding it yourself.

I have no general inspiration.
If I hear a song that makes me want to make a level you are BOUND to here that song in the level. If it's a graphic, I'm obviously going to use it(the whole reason why I attempted the Topman in White Jungle and SMB2 levels). Then there is just playing games themself.
For the level I'm making right now, it's a mixture of music and playing the game. After a long hiatus from making levels I got both Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. Now, I had made the White Jungle level by looking at videos, and I didn't like how that level turned out. Anyways, I was listening to some remixes of Sonic Generation music, and I found Radical Highway. I decided to make a Radical Highway level with that music, and to help me make the level I played the game SA2.

I usually just think of a gimmick, then make a poorly designed level around that gimmick. After that, I go back and redesign the block/npc placement of that level.

Music is mostly what give me inspiration. The other is block/npc/BGOs/BGs.

Plus, I also got the motivation from Soopakoopa to make cutscenes, like in his Crazy Cake Heist episode.

I often get inspiration in a couple of ways.
The first is by playing games or other people's levels and find something that could make a cool gimmick for a level. Take, for example, a level where items are hidden in Yoshi eggs. Why not make a whole level based around eggs? Or sometimes I see a strange way someone uses custom NPCs and think of some new way that could be used. Sometimes I see a background like a canyon and decide to make a level based off of that. Or you can even combine things, like snow fields with desert. That would be cool.
The second is by misinterpreting names. This sounds weird, but stay with me. Take the level name I saw in a random place: "Potion Plains." I think of SMB2 potions. What this makes me think of is a level where you can travel between many different parts of the level by using SMB2 potions buried in the ground everywhere. Even if this wasn't exactly the idea behind it, I got a cool level idea just from reading a name.

There's no need to create another thread about the same topic. Merged.

I get my inspiration from everywhere. I just look at other people's ideas and stuff, then I get inspired from them and come up with my own. That's how I came up with all the gimmicks, items and objects in my game. Even though I do come up with something on my own..
