Mario 3 Cannons?

I've noticed SMBX doesn't have the Diagonal shooting cannons from Mario 3, or the more complicated rotating quad-cannon, is it possible to make either of these?

I'm not sure but if I recall correctly diagonal shooting cannons were done. I don't remember how but I guess it'd be pretty easy, just add a NPC layer, set events for their movements and place the NPC generators and voila, you're good to go! As for rotating one, you'd basically do the same - you would have to place a generator for every direction the cannonball throws and adjust the delay of the generator so it matches the rotation animation of the cannon. So basically, with enough CGFX and basic game mechanic skills and knowledge; yes, it is possible to create both.

I'm very new to doing anything with layers, the most I've done is make blocks move. I'd be happy to just make the basic diagonal firing cannon right now but thinking about how to do it is making my head hurt a bit. ^^

Diagonal cannons were done by shooting projectile npcs with gravity horizonally. They will collide with the ground, however.

(At least that's the only way I've seen them done)

So I set up an NPC with nogravity=1 and make it a generator that launches horizontally? Wouldn't that just make it go straight left or right?

You want nogravity=0 (the default option for regular npcs ex: goombas/koopas). However, like I said, the npcs will collide with the ground a few times.

Try Chad's level "Fearsome Flagship" from his episode "Super Mario Star Expedition". I remember he perfected them using events and layers. I think I still have the level somewhere, if I can find it I'll send it to you. It also, from memory has the Rocket Engines as well.

About that, @Chad made a SMB3 Cannon replaces SMB3 Conveyor Belt so how to do this is making some layers and Events, try to move it to the diagonal matter (Example: Horizontal = 2; Vertical = -2) but that is for only one time that is gonna Show up so you have to make sure to go backwards too but on the hiding Position. It is kinda complicated at first but if you are checking a/some Levels from @Chad he made it clearly no Problems...
