Everyone is execrable at designing at first. You should see my first level. Anyway, it's a matter of playing superb episodes like Luigi's Fight for the Mushroom Kingdom or Super Mario Star Expedition and while playing these, pay close attention to the details. Notice how, for instance, Lavender Lagoon in SMSE, despite it being a pink SMB1 cave, has gimmicks and scenery. Lots of people right off the bat say "I can't find scenery so I won't add any". This is honestly unacceptable. Scenery is one of the biggest parts of level designing, but another thing is coins and pipes: These are definitely essential. So, anyway, of course, there are a lot more vital elements to a good SMBX level. Instead of going over them all in one massive post, what I was thinking is that you should send me one of your levels (that is NOT kaizo difficulty or in other words in your project) and I will fix everything of it, add better graphics if necessary, fix all cut-off, add more gimmicks and layers/events, add more scenery, and fix any glitches/bugs. After that, I would send you the new version of the level (with a DIFFERENT NAME so you don't have to replace the old file) and then I would give you list of what I fixed and what I added. That way, you can compare the old level with the new level and then notice how make a good level.

(Oh, and if you want to see a sample level of mine to check my designing skills, that would be fine. I'm not going to see I'm a genius, but I'm not going to say I'm bad, either. My average, overall score I usually get on a level is about a seven.)

I actually noticed. when a friend send me a smw level I was able to effortlessly restyle it to look EXACTLY like a smb3 level. I changed all the clocks, npc's and bosses to be smb3 styled. and it turned out very well. so that means that im great with graphics.

well im great at finding graphics and using them. I feel like if someone was there to do level design and I was there to find graphics then great levels can be achieved easily. I feel like my skills at smbx levels are only 1/2 of what anyone needs for a good level. I am only half a level maker <insert image of somebody cut in half down the middle> XD

The weird thing is that I can make a level for quite some time, but I make tons of weird matchups with all the smb's together for graphics.
