We get a lot more legitimate users than we do illegitimate ones - our spam protection for the forums is pretty solid. It's the IRC we need to worry more about.

I agree and Admin activation would take too long anyway; however, there's always room for better protection. Perhaps messing around a bit with the newly registered users group could help out with illegitimate users?

I'm pretty sure I disabled the Newly Registered Users group a while ago. There's not much we can do with it anyway besides limit a few features and that wouldn't do much to stop post spam.

Disabling the use of most BBCode, such as images? Pretty sure you can limit the amount of posts that are made in a certain span of time, that way it cuts down on the spam enough so a staff member can get to it quickly.

That would make it difficult for new users to post their SMBX projects, though (which new users join to do with relative frequency), since such topics need screenshots. I agree with this in principle but you couldn't just ban images altogether.
