They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Nyan Pretty Fly

Postby litchh » Sun Jan 05, 2014 3:35 am

Title says all - it's a flying on the Nyan Cat. 2-nd player will get extra cat for the flying. Beware, level is pretty hard.

Level Review #2: Nyan Pretty Fly by litchh

Level Design: 4.1/10
Hmm...yes, it's apparent, despite first glance, this isn't a joke level - it's authentic, although it's really memetic. I really liked the idea of this level, though. It's structured around a relatively overused gimmick involving riding platforms. This might seem quite bland, but throw in a whole load of obstacles, and it really makes it seem as if a fair amount of effort has been crammed into this level. Also, riding Nyan Cat is quite a unique idea in itself and I am going to tell FNC about this level. However, the player is just riding a platform for the whole duration of the level, and plus the fact that the level is just one long horizontal section, makes the level feel really long and repetitive after a while because all they're doing is dodge obstacles, collect coins and get to the end. In fact, it's too long - after the first half the level just becomes a crap-ton of enemy NPCs trying to knock the player off the Nyan Cat. The other thing that was a problem is the first mushroom generator at the start of the level. It's placed on a platform, and due to the elevated height of an upgraded Mario, there is a risk that they'll bang the platform and possibly die - you might want to change the height of that. The next problem is the trollface NPC's platform a while on - the height in block-spaces between the platform and the Nyan Cat is five, and that's the height of Mario's jump, making it difficult to jump back on Nyan Cat if the player is on the trollface platform. However, it was still a unique idea despite those flaws, which will benefit from being fixed.

Music: 10/10
Why not use the Nyan Cat theme if that's the basis of the level? My scoring here would probably be either top marks or absolute zero due to the memetic nature of this level. No explanation needed - it deserves 10 because the Nyan Cat is the focal part of the level.

Graphics: 5.82/10
OK, the graphics...well, for starters, the right background was used against the Nyan Cat, and the fact that this background was used makes it seem as if it feels like the real thing, since both backgrounds are really similar. However, later on, we see what makes this level appear to be a joke - the other graphics. Arguably they look kinda weird. For example, that person with a jet pack replacing the SMB3 Koopa Paratroopa. But it's not bad - it ties in well with the memetic nature of this level and it doesn't even clash at all - everything is part of the bigger picture - Nyan Cat. Actually, there is another thing that does clash - the Metroid graphics. They don't tie in well because they have an indoor vibe and the level takes place outdoors. The next thing I found was that there were some graphics in which it's hard to tell a distinction between that and the real thing - the white "Propeller Blocks" for example. One would think that they could be replacing the Propeller Flamethrower Block because the Propeller Blocks have been replaced, but they're not - they damage the player, and it's so easy to get damaged because there's no distinction between that and the real thing - you need to change up on that graphic slightly. Also, the quirky nature of some of the graphics can make a player laugh - for example, that massive King Bill (technically, it is a King Bill because it's bigger than a Banzai Bill) saying "Your resistance makes me harder". I laughed at that point, but it's still really creative. Lack of background objects, as it can be argued, was another minus, but the level takes place in space where it's hard to place background objects since they're mainly ground-based. You could do with adding some SMW-styled planets, for example.

NPC Placement: 3.7/10
Like a lot of levels I've seen, this is always the section where it all goes downhill. In a nutshell, the NPC usage and placement is way too sporadic. Like I said earlier, the second half is nothing but a crap-ton of NPCs, but the skillful use of the invisible npc-178 using layer-toggling was well-spotted - it prevents the player jumping backwards to grab another Nyan Cat. However, there are quite a load of cons as well as the pros. Firstly. the mushroom generators. For the standard mushroom generator, you seem to be being too generous - mushrooms spawn at a rate of 1 per second, which gives the player the powerup and then places one in the inventory. The Poison Mushroom generator later on was unfairly difficult. It's on the same spawn rate as the first mushroom generator and so there is something like an 80% chance that the player gets damaged by the effects of the poison - doing something like 1 per 3 seconds would work as it gives escape time. The next problem I found was the lack of powerups in the level - you could add some more generators of different powerups at certain stages of the level, and there was this propeller NPC that I was talking about earlier. Although it's mainly a graphical problem, there is another problem with it that's repeated with a lot of other enemies - spam. That's another contributing factor that makes this level unfairly difficult - cutting out a few of them will make the level easier.

Overall Result: 5.91/10
This is a good score when judged with the scores of the other aspects of the level. Fixing the problems mentioned up the review will probably score this a higher review should another user come to review it, but still, nice idea used and stretched to its limit.
