In all honesty people complain about it mainly because of the start screen. I will agree that it wasn't the best idea to emulate the start screen of Windows 8 from the user interface of the Windows Phone OS, but if you can get through the start screen, it's almost like Windows 7.
And it's very optimal for touch screen devices, especially the Microsoft Surface.

Why didn't he just install Windows 7 on it instead of spending thousands of dollars on a glossy crap?

Because my dad hates anything Microsoft related ever since Windows 8 came out, and yes it is a glossy crap.

Oh man, me and my dad could go on for hours on Windows 8 (and Microsoft in general). My dad had to upgrade his work computer to Windows 8 from XP and didn't like it one bit.
I hate Windows 8 so much because of how much it's trying to be a tablet OS, but not a desktop OS. My dad hates it because of how hard it is to get stuff done. He uses it for his business, and has absolutely no use for the tablet interface. Also, it was a super hard transition for him since he hadn't used any Windows OS newer than XP. Yes, it can be good on touchscreen devices, but my household has a laptop and two desktops that run Windows 8, none have a touchscreen. In fact, Windows 8 was part of the reason I tried Linux (the other part was XP going out of service).

Exactly. Windows 8 is really confusing. I'm so glad we have windows 7 now.

Never liked Windows 8. The start screen is a good touch, but it just doesn't feel the same as Windows 7. For example, this one time me & family went to a hotel. Said hotel had free wifi, with no pass. Problem was, Windows 8 thought it needed a password. Don't ask me why, but it did. Windows 8 just doesn't feel the same to me.
and omg it was so fucking hard to find the control panel

I find Windows 8 nice and fun to use but after like 2 months it crashes for no reason. Had to get a Windows 7 then that is super powerful. My Dad has my Windows 8 now and it was not so bad. He deals with Win 8.

I remember this thread from SMBX Revived!
I use Windows 8, and I will hopefully get windows 8.1 today.
What do you guys think of 8.1?

For me it isn't bad. You just have to deal with the whole stuff they made in Win 8.

My dad hates W8 particularly because of how hard it is to do stuff on it. Forgot your password? Go to the depths of your mind to retrieve your microsoft email you never used since like 10 years ago. Can't remember? Go through a bunch of microsoft bullshit to just get back into your computer.

I like Windows 8. It's a fine OS, and it's not so bad once you get past Metro. Now Metro, oh god, do I hate Metro. I went ahead and got a program to bypass Metro to just go to the desktop directly. Other than the flatter looking windows, it feels like just a Windows 7. Runs all my programs with no problems, and I have only experienced one Blue Screen over the 1 year I had it. (Funny thing, that was my first Blue Screen ever too!)

Windows 8 is way to much like windows 7. They only have smaller icons.

Not at all. Much of the code was optimized and Windows 8 provides a steady performance for games and memory-intensive software.

That's not Windows fault. They probably lied to you.

Go to my computer and theres a huge button for control panel.
Long story short, people hate windows 8 only because it's new, pretty much the same happened with vista an 7. (Though vista did had a lot of bugs). Not to mention the only thing Start menu have that Metro doesn't is the "recently used" list.
