Need help installing NPC's

Postby Teemster2 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 12:09 pm

I know this will come off as a stupid question but I am having trouble adding new NPC's to SMBX. I am not smart when it comes to this stuff. Anyways I have checked you tube tutorials and even had someone tell me to put the files in the world or level folder which I tried. I downloaded the SMBX graphics pack. I created a world folder with the name of my world and even added a few level folders. When I add NPC's (enemies) I can't find them in the SMBX editor. What am I doing wrong?

If I put an NPC in a level folder do I need to copy it? If I don't I lose the NPC from the pack. I was also told I could just replace graphics in the game. I could replace some of the NPC's but the tutorial has me replacing graphics with similar graphics. So if I did this would I have to replace a goomba for example with something as small as a goomba? This is all to confusing for me.

I just want to add NPC's like all of the pirana plants, charging chuck, more fish, castle and ghost NPC's and boom boom. I wish there was a program that just installed everything to the game so you would not need to add them to folders or replace files. Then they would be in the editor every time you loaded it up. Why has nobody tried this yet?

You need to make a SMBX graphics NPC FAQ for dummies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The trick with SMBX is that when you put in a custom graphic, you're not putting in a NEW graphic, but rather replacing one of the existing graphics. You need to look at the name of your custom graphic picture, and match it to one of the pictures in SMBX's graphics folder. Then you would find the custom graphic in the same place in the editor that you would find the original graphic.
WARNING! Custom graphics don't often stay within the game tabs - if you replaced the Super Mario World Mega Mole graphic with a Super Mario Bros. 2 Giant Shy Guy, it would still show up in the Super Mario World tab. There's no way to temporarily move the placement of buttons in the game tabs.

Look at how the Invasion 2 does it. You need to set up your folders and graphics in a similar format.
SMBX>Episodes>folder with the name of your level>custom graphics
SMBX>Episodes>name of your level.lvl

So basically you want to have your level and a folder with the same name as your level in the same location. Any custom graphics for that level go in the folder.
(And for reference, custom music goes outside of the folder, or with the level)

If you put the music in the folder ABOVE the level folder (i.e. the episode folder), you would put "Music.mp3", but if you put it in the level folder, you would put "Levelfolder/Music.mp3".

Well I figured out the NPC's but I have not tried any of them yet. Reason being half of the NPC pictures are not even showing and the flying super koopa shows 2 koopa's in the picture. What I mean is I see 50% of the picture and the rest is gone. I am afraid they may not work in the game. Yes I did match the NPC # with the NPC I was deleting.

Again, look at the Invasion 2 folders for examples of how to do this.

You need to create text files for custom NPCs if you change their sizes. More info can be found here.
