What I mean is an episode that has a fleshed-out story or a more traditional Mario episode without a story at all. Or to put it simply story or little to no story?

For me, I think a good story is nice, but not necessary. Because what most people are going to judge are the levels in the episode.

While I have played excellent "little-to-no-story" episodes, the ones that interest me a lot are the story based ones. Even if the levels are pretty standard, a good story will keep me interested, adding an extra goal to the playthrough. You gotta learn what happens! Otherwise, it's the normal "you get to the end to beat it," which isn't BAD, but doesn't feel as rewarding in chiller gameplay episodes, where getting to the end is super easy. All this leads me to tie a lot of story into my episodes, which has been super fun, a great structuring tool, and a motivator xD

I agree. A bit of a story, even just a simple plot, can make an episode more interesting to play.

You could make the argument that every game has a simple plot.

eh, it depends. A story inside an episode is cool but at the same time im just here to play some mario so i don't really expect a deep and detailed story in a mario game
