Do you know what i love about them? It has been like this since mario kart was made. You throw the green shell and hope it hits someone but then it comes back at you and hits you instead.

Anybody here who mastered fire hopping already? I'm practicing it. It's difficult as hell.

What is fire hopping exactly? That term sounds vaguely familiar.

I believe it is whenever you boost like from a mushroom or something, you start hopping like crazy to keep the speed boost for a little bit longer, but don't quote me because I am not 100% sure if that is correct

Oh that makes sense then. I guess that'd be really useful for time trials but it doesn't seem like it'd be THAT important during real races.
Of course I don't play this game at anywhere near a competitive level so I trust that it's probably pretty integral.

It cuts like a second off the total time. Not much, and it's not like it matters for people who use inner drifters like me anyway because it doesn't work for those.

Yeah, fire hopping is an extension of a boost that you do by continuously jumping while the boost is active that can only be implemented by outer drifters (if that's how you call them), which makes inner drifters extremely underpowered, and the problem is, I'm used to inner drifting. While fire hopping isn't as broken as snaking from Mario Kart DS, it's still really effective. It doesn't sound like it, but in extreme cases you can save up to ten seconds which is insane. Of course it's much more useful in time trials, because in online racing you just have too many obstacles. But it's extremely helpful in certain situations. Considering I have 4000+ online points I usually encounter fire hopper users and experienced how inferior I am as inner drifters, hence I decided to switch to outer drifter, even though it's going to be hard to get used to them. I still think inner drifter have more style though, but whatever.

Inner drifters have the advantage in being able to take corners better, which makes fire hoppers and inner drifters have about the same time really. At least from my experience as an inner drifter vs a fire hopper.

I can't get used to inner drifting. I'm surprised so many people use it, since it used to only be outer. I've gotten so used to outer drifting that I can't do anything else.

Ooh snaking was awful, I remember how much is broke MKDS' online mode. Why is fire hopping unique to outer drifters, though? Inner drifters can still jump can't they?

To implement fire hopping you have to alternately jump to left and right, and inner drifters can't jump in those directions.

I find it amazing that I've played Mario Kart for its entire existence and am not entirely sure what any of you guys are talking about. Casual as fuck. If inner drifting is exactly what it sounds like, I generally do that. The way Kyo describes it makes it seem like there's a less shallow interpretation, though. Or maybe I'm reading into it too much.
Anyway, this game is pretty much a disappointment for me. I like it, I enjoy it, but I would have waited for a release that contained more content, because it seems so stripped down to its barest bones over previous Mario Karts that I wonder if I'll bother buying the next. I've said this before about Mario Kart so I'll just state it shortly: The new stuff is great, the sacrificing of the old stuff is not. I'm not sure I'll ever use Mario Kart TV or even battle mode in its current form.
I got a free game with it, so there's that. In fact I'm one to hypothesize that the Mercedes-Benz DLC and amiibo functionality are setting a precedent for even more content for this game in the future. Perhaps the free game is a tacit admission that those who buy it at launch won't be getting the full experience immediately, so they decided out of good will to remedy that. I dunno. I know I'm not particularly the kind of person who wants to spend more money on the same game after the fact, but given everything I mentioned, I could be convinced.

The whole drift thing is simple, really. You have bodies that outer drift meaning they head towards the center of a road when drifting or an inner drift which could put a less experienced player off the track, but more experienced people will be well on the corners.

Yeah inner and outer drifting was introduced in Mario Kart Wii and returned in Mario Kart 8. It's not an advanced technique but instead an inherent feature of each kart body.
Also yeah Magician I agree that the content in this game seemed REALLY bare bones compared to previous Mario Karts. I wish they'd had a real battle mode and maybe missions/competitions from the DS and Wii games, those were awesome.
