[SMBX2 Beta 4] The Great Goo Blaster (World 2 Demo Available Now) (Update 3)

Postby Julia Pseudo » Sat Aug 07, 2021 4:18 pm

Hi everyone! It's been a long, long time - nearly a decade - since I've released anything of any significant scale related to SMBX. It's taken me a long time to put together something I'm confident in, but today I'm finally releasing (and officially unveiling for the first time) something!

The Great Goo Blaster

an SMBX episode by Julia Pseudo

This project contains the best of my SMBX work, and currently contains the first two worlds, plus a few other things. I am really happy with how it's come out, and I could not have done it without my friend xtravisage (who made the world map), my lovely girlfriend underFlorence (who provided lots of important technical support for LunaLua related stuff), and many others of you whose graphics and Lua I used and whose feedback I have garnered over the years.

Story
(the most important aspect of any SMBX project!)
Bowser has returned for revenge against the Mario brothers with his most dastardly plot yet! He's acquired a great goo blaster, with which he plans to goo up the Mario brothers' house, thereby drastically reducing its property value and rendering the Mario brothers penniless! If they want to challenge him, the brothers must travel to Happy Tree Island, but Happy Tree Island is widely known as a place of fear and horror, and who knows what dangers could await them?

Features (in the current demo)
- Over 15 levels
- 5 star coins in every level
- lots of secrets!
- heavy usage of smbx2 features and npcs
- a world map made with MrDoubleA's SMWMap
- Enjl's antizip.lua
- puzzles
- achievements!
- switch palaces (only one at the moment)
- looped ogg music tracks courtesy of underFlorence and xtravisage!

Stuff that currently isn't featured
- rewards for collecting star coins (coming soon)
- a launcher page (coming soon)
- levels in world 2 that 100% match the world theme visually (coming soon; the peaches and stuff were a late addition by xtravisage while making the map that we both agree is good, but it was too late to rework all the levels. this will be in the next release!)
- super amazing lua stuff (i am just not that technical, and i am happy with the current degree of lua stuff more or less, though there'll be a bit more in the future hopefully, for star coins and so forth.)

Design notes
- Levels in this are pretty long (but the longest have multiple midpoints) and fairly difficult. I have assumed that anyone playing this has at least basic Mario knowledge, so that kind of low-level tutorializing is not here.
- Mario and Luigi are both available to be played, but levels are primarily designed and tested with Mario in mind, so if there are Luigi-specific issues, they will not likely be addressed.
- Similarly, there are start points for two players in each level, but levels are designed and tested with one player in mind, and many of SMBX2's new features do not support two players, so related issues will not be addressed.

Known issues
- Using the offscreen exit in the Palace of Diamonds counts as pressing the switch.

Credits
- Level design, storyline, and world map planning by me, Julia Pseudo
- World map design and certain story elements by my friend xtravisage (Lexi)
- Playtesting and Lua assistance by my girlfriend underFlorence
- Story concept by my friend rilamon
- Uses graphics from the Ultimate SMBX Community Graphics Pack assembled by Red Yoshi and Squishy Rex
- and Valtteri's graphics pack along with his various Mario Maker graphics rips and edits (SMB1/SMB3 16-bit edits and SMW rips)
- Level-specific graphics, Lua, and music credits are found in "credits.txt" in the corresponding levels' folders, and these main credits and episode-wide asset credits can also be found in README.txt in the main episode folder
- credit also goes to the entire SMBX community for inspiration
- Wohlstand, for the Moondust editor
- Redigit for making the original game
- The SMBX2 team for making a lovely modern version of SMBX
- Axiom for getting SMBX to run on Mac OS X
- and nintendo something or other

Crediting me
Any graphics and such that I’ve made for this episode (those credited to Julia Pseudo) are totally ok for you to use, as long as you credit me, Julia Pseudo, as the creator. If you want to use anything made by other creators, ask them (most of it is taken from the community graphics pack though, available in the graphics forum)!

Upcoming Stream (now ended)
My friend xtravisage is streaming this demo at 5 PM Eastern time today, August 7 on her youtube channel (that's a little over 30 minutes from time of posting)! Check it out if you like, I'll also be commentating!

UPDATE: The stream has ended, you can watch the replay here.
Link: https://youtu.be/GS9tBgrmTpI
Part 2 of the stream is here: https://youtu.be/1b90Vo_a86A

IMPORTANT UPDATE: A hotfix has been released that prevents a crash in Beezo Valley. The main download has been updated, but you can also download the fixed level on its own. If you do so, drag and drop the level into the episode folder.
Also another has been released that prevents a crash in The Desert of Drought.
In a third update I have made some small but important changes to the credits in README.txt to fix some things that were previously in error.

8/8/2021: Another update has been released, which contains some small changes in response to feedback. You can still download the hotfixes on their own if you'd like, but this contains a few other changes as well, including a fix for the red paratroopa issue in Mushwood Road courtesy of MrDoubleA.

8/10/2021: Another update has been released, almost certainly the last update for this release unless a critical issue is found. It contains some small changes that slightly reduce the difficulty of Beezo Valley and The Desert of Drought in response to feedback, and contains a fix for a small issues with the Snifits in one of the later areas of Saccharine Sinkhole.

8/15/2021: A third update, probably the last one for real, is here! Find the changelog below here.
Spoiler: show
- Made the secret exit a bit more obvious in The Desert of Drought.
- Changed the fifth star coin in Pyramid Hijinks to no longer require a shell or leaf to access, preventing conflict with the level's Kuribo Shoes which are also required to access that star coin.
- Fixed a minor cutoff issue in Desert Japes.
- Removed some of the boos in the main room of Spooky Switch Manor.
- Reworked the powerups in the second half of Singed Stronghold in order to make the fourth star coin accessible from the first midpoint.
- Removed a snifit and some of the quicksand in Saccharine Sinkhole to make the level less frustrating.
- Reworked a particular area near the end of the Palace of Diamonds to prevent a koopa shell from despawning.
- Added coins to a certain hidden area in Rex Ravine to make the beneficial path more clear, and reshaped blocks in a different hidden area to fix collision issues.

Thanks! I hope you enjoy it!

Also, I put together a small update. Nothing here is critical but it contains a lot of small changes to levels in response to feedback I've received, and a fix to the paratroopa issue previously present in Mushwood Road.

Download it here, or in the first post. This contains the entire episode, and should support save files (and progress.json) from previous versions.

In tandem with making a thread for this project for SMW Central's C3, which you can find here, I'd also like to mention a few exciting new features that have been implemented for the next release of this project, which I'd also like to confirm is still being worked on:

- pretty text boxes courtesy of MrDoubleA's littledialogue.lua
- rewards for collecting star coins: in the next demo, there will no longer be lives, and instead coins will be used as a currency to buy items at Peach's Castle, with items being unlocked depending on how many star coins you collect
- star coins that stay collected when Mario touches the ground after grabbing them, similar to Celeste
- a fast travel system, via linking to Peach's Castle
- restart from any checkpoint, or the start of the level, once checkpoints are unlocked.
- levels in world 2 that use the world's unique visual design instead of being regular desert levels; this isn't in the current demo because the concept for world 2 was reworked at xtravisage's suggestion close to the demo's release. However, world 2's levels have had their visual style completely overhauled by xtravisage to match the Dessert Peach theme and are very pretty now.
