How to make NPCs glow?

Hello all! I've been loving SMBX and have been working on a small episode for a little bit, but I want to make a section where the player is carrying a key that also functions as a light. Attaching layers works, but I also want to bring the npc with me to another section, where the light doesn't seem to follow. I also have a Phanto chasing the player throughout multiple dark sections, is it possible to make it glow more too for clarity's sake?

you could try changing the light settings for those npcs instead of attaching a light source.
