Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Adventure

Postby KlickyMario321+ » Wed Jun 23, 2021 4:10 pm

Today I present my first episode Sonic: The Complete Adventure!

An all-new 2D adventure in the Sonic Universe all waiting for you! It'll be compatible with SMBX 2.0 Beta 3 & Beta 4.

Story
It was a beautiful day in South Island, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the grass was green. And Sonic the Hedgehog was hanging out with his friends. Sonic and Knuckles were at Green Hill Zone, fairly bored. Sonic tells Knuckles to go eat a plant, and that it would be so hilarious. Knuckles was all over that idea and goes to try and eat the pink flower until he realized that it's part of the island. Then Sonic gives Knuckles a "random SMB2 mushroom that he found while dumpster diving at Overwatchers' Pizza and Soda Parlor over at Spring Yard Zone". So Knuckles does so, only to find out that he just ate a magic mushroom that turns into 50 cheeseburgers after you eat it and gets so fat, he explodes. Then Sonic gets Tails to eat all the cheeseburgers Knuckles dropped, a skull and a lot of green slime. After this, Tails barfs out an unconscious Knuckles. Sonic tells him it's like Sleeping Beauty and that he has to give him a kiss to wake him up. Tails tries to give him a kiss, but farted at his face instead, prompting Knuckles to go on a rampage and beat Tails up. Sonic broke them both up and told Knuckles to go and leave Tails alone. Then Tails tells Sonic to come with him to a spot where he claims he saw something crash land onto the island. It was a sky fighter-like ship, and inside was... Ryan! He must've tried to get to South Island for a vacation. But before they could talk more of it, DISASTER STRUCK! The peace was shattered as Sonic's friends were disappearing and robots have taken their place. This must all be the work of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. And worst of all, he's having the badniks rebuild the Electric Egg and set it afloat. However, he needs an organic power source to start the Electric Egg up. Eggman saw that Sonic was hanging out with his best friend, Miles "Tails" Prower. So Eggman kidnapped Tails just to throw Sonic off his game. Eventually, Sonic recieved a letter from Tails saying:
Spoiler: show
Dear Sonic,
If you are reading this, Eggman has captured me and locked me away in the Electric Egg! If you want to rescue me, you'll have to get the 7 Chaos Emeralds and teach Eggman a lesson! But be careful, Sonic! Eggman has built some Master Robots to put an end to you! Get the Emeralds from the Special Stages and you can free me! Good luck!
-Tails
And so begins Sonic's adventure to save Tails and the world from disaster! (Yes, I updated the story. I wanted it to coordinate with the Intro Movie.)
Spoiler: show
He appeared in some levels including Final Zone and when you thought the worst happened, wait until you unlock the ending. He's still ALIVE!

Progress and Zone Information
Green Hill Zone: A crisp and sunny tropical island on a beach with lots of flora and fauna and the everlasting feeling of summer. Easy. Straightforward. Enough said.
Image
Bridge Zone: A series of wooden bridges connected to grassy islands over a huge sea located upstream of the island's massive central river and close to wide waterfall.
Image
Jungle Zone: A huge, thick rainforest, with treacherous waterways, snaking vines and giant trees. Indeed, Act 2 is a vertical level where Sonic has to climb a massive waterfall using logs as platforms.
Image
Marble Zone: Ancient ruins covered in tall grass in the mountains, along with several lava lakes and underground purple dungeons can also be found, featuring more large lava pools, torches lighting the dungeons up, and decorative prison cages.
Image
Labyrinth Zone: A large, underwater cave system located underneath South Island. It is full of orange stone, some of which appears polished. Additionally, plants and crystals decore the Zone.
Image
Spring Yard Zone: A pinball-machine like city with bumpers and springs.
Image
Star Light Zone: The quiet twilight of the city building-tops at night give home to the Star Light Zone. This unusually peaceful highway suspended in the urban skies is the first of its kind, and though brief, is more fun than it is in Spring Yard Zone
Image
Sparkling Zone: This zone originally from the Sonic 1 beta sees Sonic run through an amusement park at night, under the stars. Some of the level resembles a construction site, with orange, metal frameworks and seemingly incomplete block walls.
Image
Scrap Brain Zone/Mecha Green Hill Zone: A large, polluted factory system located on the highest peak of South Island. Outdoors, many buildings in several colors can be spotted in the background, with smokestacks occasionally spewing fresh pollution into the red-colored sky. Indoors, the buildings feature many light green walls with electronic devices on them. If you think that's not the worst, Act 3 is a mechanized Green Hill Zone.
Image
Clock Work Zone: The lift to the Electric Egg Zone.
Image
Sky Base Zone: At the end of the previous level, Eggman flees to an airship hidden in the smog clouds of Scrap Brain Zone. Sonic, obviously, pursues. Sky Base Act 1 sees the heroic hedgehog navigate his way through the exposed gantries and electric fields of the airship anchorage above Scrap Brain, speeding to catch the fat man's massive escape vessel before it departs. In Act 2, Sonic, without any rings to protect him throughout the level, must brave the fearsome defenses on board the zeppelin itself, cannons, bullet bill blasters, spikeballs, and the ever-present threat of falling thousands of feet into hedgehogy oblivion. Sonic joins the Eggman empire in Act 3 after realizing "The Truth" but betrays Eggman quickly after hearing that he will destroy Ryan's World and stops the invasion, only to be sentenced to death.

World Map: The world that separates the levels from South Island.

Ok, so I played the entire episode... And I have to say... This episode has a lot of flaws.

Now where do I begin?

- All pipe and door warps don't have any sprites that show them as actual warps, so you have to just run around like a moron until you find the warps that lead you to the next section.

- There are some softlocks: Intro has a softlock near the end, Special Stage 4 has a softlock as all TNT blocks explode, thus you have to kill yourself as the only option. Another softlock is the bad ending you access in Emerald Security. Sonic just walks to the right to solid blocks and you cannot do anything.

- The graphics are terrible in most levels, the vanilla graphics are randomly placed as if it's a joke episode made in 2012. (Some graphic images are still gifs, I suggest converting them to png as X2 supports PNGs)

- 50% of the levels are copy paste of the previous levels. Even if you planned to make them harder, they're the same no matter what. (Some have bad graphic placements, some have no enemies and just leisure point A to point B levels etc.)

- There are a lot of deprecated NPCs. (I guess this is made for 1.3 but almost no one uses 1.3 anymore so just switch to 2.0)

- The special stages were just the first levels of first 7 zones, and they were the same except some areas were different. This is not a good thing.

- The custom HUD elements and some sprites are terribly drawn. (I mean, it's not that bad but it drops the quality of the episode even more)

- The levels aren't even exciting. They are just romps from left to right, some down from up, some have enemies, some don't have enemies...

- The bosses aren't even exciting either. You placed powerup generators all over the place, there are Hammer Suits at some bosses, making them complete jokes. Where's the challenge at the boss if you can get a powerup as soon as you get hit?

- All levels have random exits: Some have offscreen, some have orbs, some have roulette, some have goal tapes... Just decide one or two exits instead of using all 7 exits.

- The story was quite interesting at the start, but it went to random directions and lost its charm at the end. I didn't understand any of the twists.

I'll give a 1/10 to this episode overall. This episode needs a complete overhaul in terms of graphics and level design. I suggest revamping most levels and looking at the 4-step level design of Nintendo before level revamps. (I know this is a Sonic episode but I mean, Sonic is a Link clone, you switch to Mario Bros and even Wario at some point, and everything is themed around Mario except a couple of enemies, bosses etc.)

Also, since I was a beta tester, you should've PM'd me in forums and sent me the completed version before release so I could test it, like 2-3 days before the 30th anniversary of Sonic. (If you did in Discord, my second account was disabled so I switched back to my first account)

:o
What?! My episode didn't get positive reviews. Holy crap, I can't believe I completely forgot to fix all the flaws before releasing it on June 23rd!

Oh no! What am I going to do? It was all for nothing. I released my first episode, but it wasn't as good. I feel like I'm lost in limbo again. This is it.

Fine, I guess I shouldn't have rushed it, but whatever you say. I'll try to fix EVERYTHING and rerelease it.

This time, I'll make sure everything is right before I rerelease it again. Hopefully, for better reviews. I tried to make an episode everyone would love and this is where it's gotten me too. I tried. I tried very hard. And I guess I am bad at making original levels sometimes. I guess I am not the perfect SMBXer after all. I might as well just give up and retire from SMBX. But if I was going to make a new episode, then I really shouldn't uninstall SMBX.

 That's it! I'll give myself another chance! I'll make a new episode and take my time on it. And I'll make sure everything is good before I release it. Also, it's 2021, not 2012. No offense, but I don't make joke episodes. Remember Quest for Cheeseburgers? It's not a joke episode, it's actually pretty cool. Okay, I'm outta here. Thanks for the review anyway. I'll try and improve on my skills.

Peace!

Don't get me wrong. I didn't say this episode was a joke episode. The placement of graphics made it look like one of those, or just an episode with little to no effort. I tried to be as constructive as possible without exceeding the level of reaching harshness in terms of critiques.

By fixing the graphics in a level and making each level unique with even getting inspired from past levels and adding the gimmicks of those, but more challenging, your episode will be even more likeable, trust me.

I guess this means I doubt you're ever going to trust me as beta tester of my future episodes again, right?

Also, I have decided to make another episode and try to focus as much as I can. It's called Friendship (the episode). And it was inspired by the Sonic 2 creepypasta fan game with the same name. Don't worry. I still have slots for level designers and beta testers and I'll release it when it's finished.

You still want to test my games or did that flunk-out make you not want to trust me again? I can always try again.

No, not like that. You could have contacted me and I'd test your episode, showed you the issues, you would fix them and release it into a better one. I mean, if it's your first episode, then it oughta be like that. but as you improve, your episodes will too.

Just whenever you make good progress, you can send a demo to your testers, they will test it, you can fix the issues and then continue.
