my first level i guess

so i made a level, took around one week and it's my first real contribution to smbx after lurking for like 6 years or something. i'm happy with it even though it's not perfect, but it's simple and i really enjoyed creating it. helped me get used to the basics of pge. so yeah anyway play it or whatever lol

oh also it's called "1-1 but more vertical", but please don't hold that against me i'm really bad with names

oh also also if you're wondering why i'm credited as "smoke40" in the readme, it's my discord name and username everywhere else and i might change it here too later to that

thanks! to be fair, i have played smbx on and off for years now but this was the first time i was mature and patient enough to focus on finishing a level lol

There's a meme that is "Finally a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!" and your level is a great 1-1 remake, unlike many others. I remembered another 1-1 remake made in this forum, that is a version full of big enemies, lava and in the end, Mario joins Bowser, and thought they're good equally! So, THEIR BATTLE will be legendary... Forget the meme part! 1-1 but vertical is really cool!

thanks! the graphics packs are in the readme, i think you should be able to find them by just searching in the graphics forum. i downloaded them just a few days ago from the graphics section on the site but that's gone now i guess.

Pretty unique concept, but this doesn't feel like "1-1 but with a twist". It just feels like a whole different level.

You could have used slopes, but I respect your choice. I'll tell you my review when I finish the level

It's really good for a first level. It does feel a little repetitive in the first section, and sometimes it feels like it lacks obstacles, such as jumps, but other than that, it isn't bad.

Also if you are getting started on creating levels, I recommend you check the luna lua page. Here you can find enemies not in the main game, such as chain chomps, fire chomps, burners or cannons.

I gave this level a shot because with absolutely zero impression I just assumed you have potential in smbx. Here goes a late night level review.

Coming here fresh of the level gives me stronger feelings about SMBX's physics than it did the level itself. It's a very long level that has absolutely zero interesting things happen in it. You said this was your first level and that really shows, because this level really gives off the vibe of you were just testing the waters with the engine, threw some tilesets together, used the least interesting enemies that mario has to offer, and so on. And quite frankly that's where my most specific remarks on the level end. It's not good. But that's not a bad thing. Gotta start somewhere, as they say.
Should I give a score? Well I'll give you a letter grade. D-

In your future endeavors I would suggest taking a look at games like DKC: Tropical Freeze or Celeste, alongside other very well-received platformers and take note how different each level is from the other in each game. They all do something different, exciting, or if it's a rompy kind of philosophy you're going for like in Yoshi's Island, see how much it varies in layouts, themes, and enemy combinations when going from one level to the next. Find out what works for you as you (hopefully) continue onward with SMBX.

I played this level and honestly it is very good. It is a nice springboard from the standard horizontal levels. Custom graphics are also great. The music was also fun. In my opinion, the level is perfect for beginner players.
