Well, that depends on what you want to use and play.

There is 2.0, which is the continuation of 1.3 SMBX. The level editor is changed to PGE editor, which is much tifüs up and better to use. Also there are a lot of playable characters depending in your playstyle and skins which you want to make your adventure on. There is also lunalua, to add custom stuff. It gets updated, so it is really well.

And there is 1.4.x (38A) SMBX, which is a standalone version of SMBX. It has the original roster, along with a lot of new content, powerups, NPCs etc. Also, there are unique concepts and episodes played there, which can be used by you as long as you credit them too.

There are a lot of episodes played in 2.0, but there are also some in 1.4.x. You can play both and even make episodes at both. Choice is yours.

How dare you leave out the 3rd option! There's a 3rd engine called New SMBX which was revived & is currently being developed by Core. I'm not sure about the differences between it & the other 2, but you can find out more by either asking around or searching it on google.

(it's a bit inaccurate since NSMBX got renamed and it's not experimental project anymore)

The note about TheXTech, it has two purposes, not only experimental proveground:
- As experimental proveground: the source of knowledge and experience I gonna to use for PGE Engine development
- As full-featured game: It's the full replica of original SMBX game (except of Editor) that can be used to play old SMBX episodes accurate, include complex kaizo levels built on bugs.

The X-Tech unlike the original game, is cross-platform, it can work on Windows, Linux, macOS and on Haiku natively, also it has the potential to be ported to Android.
Since XTech exist, I have next roles for both X-Tech and PGE Engine:
- Keep X-Tech to play old episodes and levels accurate, include old bugs.
- Make PGE Engine being modern engine free from old SMBX bugs, intended to build new projects and games without inheriting of old game bugs.
