[SMBX 2.0 Beta 4] Editor's level tester stopped working

Postby Human_Goomba » Thu Jun 25, 2020 8:35 pm

I use the smbx 2.0 editor since at least 2-3 weeks and had no massive issues with it at all. However, something weird happened as I was building a level.
At first, a crash note happened as I was opening a second level (By crash note, I mean the one where it closes your sbmx and it shows the PGE cat but beaten up or something)

I restart smbx 2.0 editor to get back to editing my level. thankfully it saved when it crashed. The problem is, for unknown reasons, the level tester has since broken. I can't test any level. I closed and re-opened smbx level creator several times, to the point where I even uninstalled and re-installed smbx, and nothing changed. The level editor works, but the level tester breaks.

By "the level tester breaks", I mean that, at first, the smbx app DOES load when you click to test the level. Then the nintendo switch message pops up, and then the loading... message with a coin icon. After that, it's just a blank, black screen. The "X2" logo does not appear in the bottom right corner (which is supposed to). Instead, it just stays blank for a few seconds, and then out of nowhere it closes itself without displaying any error message.

Can someone please tell me what am I supposed to fix here? I've run out of ideas.

small edit: I can still launch the world test thing like before, and I can still play smbx worlds. The only issue is the SMBX level tester in the editor

Welp I managed to fix it. I think the main reason why the editor stopped working was because when it crashed, it made a back-up of my level, that I had NEVER saved before. It had the name --level--, although I never gave that name to the level. Must've been a placeholder name for the backup or something. Ever since that crash happened, the editor just stopped working. It sucks but the only idea I had left was to completely delete everything (including my levels) and re-install it again. Thankfully it works now. I'm still unsure why such a bug exists and how come out of 30 views no one knew the answer to my problem.

I relayed this to the other devs. Maybe we can figure out what's happening. Interesting find. If it ever happens again, please quote me here and try to recall any additional information like how we might be able to reproduce it. I'll keep you posted if we find anything.

For some reason it just happened again. I was starting to build a 4th level, this time I hadn't gotten a crash note. I have absolutely no idea how this happens. Here's my theories though:

1. I probably click too fast to change the level editor's window screen to full screen
2. At some point I accidently launched the level tester, and so I mass spammed the close button on the window to attempt to close it, then it started freezing and eventually closed.

Otherwise I can't recall much. I don't know if it's the way my levels are arranged. It might also be because I tried directly opening a level file* using the SMBX launcher at some point, thus changing my lvl files' icons to the smbx icons. Here's a screenshot of what I meant.

That's pretty much all I know about this issue. It sucks that it randomly happens out of the blue. The level editor didn't even break on the first try, it broke after a few launches.. unexplainable on my part. On another note, is there a way to change back the lvl file icon back to the white sheet icon?

Hm... that's bizarre... One thing I know is that the editor is prone to crashing when running out of RAM. I've never experienced this below like 20 levels opened though (8GB RAM with other programs open eating part of that), and it never broke for me in such a theatrical fashion that it killed the entire testing process. Thanks for providing the two guesses as well. I don't know much of the inner workings of the editor, but it seems those might be valuable to try in order to get it to happen on our end...

To change a file type's icon you can follow these instructions. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12383/c ... windows-7/
If you wanna ACTUALLY open lvl files with SMBX2, you can run the "add_leveltest_assoc.bat"-File in the main data folder, but that's somewhat unrelated to all the goings-on with the editor.

I definitely have enough RAM though, so that's not the issue here.
Also, for some reason, the level tester started working again..?!?!?!? I don't quite understand what's going on. Maybe shutting down and reopening my computer somehow fixes it??? Either way, I still don't understand how come this bug occurs and how come it can magically fix itself.
