Valtteri tried his best to make something great, but he lacked the resources to do it due to how limited SMBX was back in the day. A lot can be said regarding how level design was back then too. It was mainly just padding, trying to do fancy things without really accomplishing anything, or just short, lackluster levels that basically had nothing in them. There were a few exceptions, but they were few and far between.

I never played Apocalypse of Foroze, but I played the level-long Abridged version where Foroze claims your level will double in popularity if it has alliteration in its name and if it has grass on logs.

Does the classic collection hold up for smbx. I played most of the episodes for the classic collections and was wondering if they held up. All episodes will be assessed on how fun they are to 100%.
Valtteri Island (Revisited) - I played this episode and enjoyed it but I cannot remember a single thing that happened in this episode. I haven't had any problems with it but there really wasn't anything notable. I'd say this is just something quick to play if you don't want anything intensive. I personally wouldn't replay this and this kind of exists. So I'd say this episode does not hold up, if I literally cannot remember what I played.
The Apocolypse of Foroze - There's 2 stars in most of the levels in the game. Each second star (around 90% of them) is literally replay the level again but go somewhere else, which just doubles the length of the episode without worthwhile content and it was really annoying. There's this one 7 minute level pyramid where there's actually a dev shortcut that was left in since the creator of themselves used it to avoid replaying the level again for the secret exit. If that warp was left in there, why wasn't the level changed in a way to make it more bearable. The other 5% of levels is collect a miscellaneous amount of items. 3% of the rest is get a powerup from another level since its not provided in the level you play. the other 2% is misc secret exits. Due to how obnoxious the secret exits are structured, I would say this episode does not hold up.
The Great Empire 1 & 2 - These are short levels that just kind of exist and not much else. I really don't remember any levels from these and I played 2 a week ago. They left a neutral impression so I would say they would not hold up.
Super Mario Adventures - I recently played this and it's the same case with Great Empire 1 & 2 with the added bonus that there's secret exits that require you to hit an invisible block that has absolutely no indication to acquire a key. This episode does not hold up today.
Bowser's Brain Control Takover - This episode was fine for the first three worlds. However, the water levels and ghost house levels have way too many graphics. They use npcs that look exactly like each other as obstacles and background objects. It is true that the background is a bit faded out but in areas such as ghost houses, since the backgrounds use transparency, when it's against a black background, you can literally not tell the difference between a bgo and npc. This problem became more apparent in world 5, speaking of the ghost houses was that the ghost houses had really unintutive exits. It wasn't even your simple maze, it was more of hey some walls are actually backgrounds with no indications. Then world 6 had this awful 7 minute autoscroller level. The levels existed until world 8 where there was a moving layer with 3 red bricks where you had to kill bowser. I would not recommend anyone play this episode and give this a 3/10. This episode does not hold up.
Super Mario Bros Revisited - throughout the episode, the secret stars were honestly really badly placed. The two secret ones were always in some uninutitve location where you just had to scour the whole level and hope you'd find them. There was one time you had to hit a series of invisible blocks. This episode does not hold up.
Late with a response here, but I think there's quite some stuff in Valtteri's Island that I still remember despite I played it last around 2017 or such.
The first level secret exit twist, the grassland levels portion, the short transition to desert, the fortress full of doors, the Valtteri boss, the sudden Bowser invasion, the levels on the final island etc. I even remember the final boss quite well; first Bowser works like Mouser and Ludwig, then I'd say there's a normal SMB3 bowser phase but I'm not fully sure; anyway at the end it's an NMSBWII-like Giant Bowser chase.
For AoF, I don't even remember playing the levels twice.
For SMA, I find it awkward that it was declared one of the best episodes back in its days, yet I couldn't really enjoy it.
BBCT was very annoying with the bugs and cramped level design, so I agree.

I have one final episode to play on the main smbx forums left:
Mario Vs the Moonbase
It's made by kentona, the same person who made The Last King of Hyrule so it should be pretty fun.
What a ride.
I can confirm that it was pretty fun and a pleasant experience, so enjoy a worthy finale!

Eclipsed wrote:After playing all the 38A episode, the best 38A episode is Shoot Brick 2. In fact, this episode isn't even a mario episode, it's some arcade game where you shoot bullets at blocks. It's kind of interesting but it has a really stupid difficulty curve as in it spikes up then goes back down to become easier at some points. It's really weird. Also make sure to play the episode is hard mode, since easy mode is not engaging at all.
where is it available? which version of 38a does it use?
